How to use the dice roller
Pick a die — d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, d20, d100 or any number of sides — then the number of dice, and press Roll. The result shows every die, the total and the chance of rolling exactly that total or more. A modifier is added to the total, the way tabletop games write 1d20+5, and Drop the lowest leaves out the smallest dice before adding. The share link keeps your dice, so a group can use the same setup; each person’s roll is their own.
Odds of each total
With more than one die, totals in the middle are far more likely than the extremes, because more combinations add up to them:
| Two six-sided dice | Combinations | Chance |
|---|---|---|
| 2 or 12 | 1 | 2.78% (1 in 36) |
| 3 or 11 | 2 | 5.56% |
| 4 or 10 | 3 | 8.33% |
| 5 or 9 | 4 | 11.11% |
| 6 or 8 | 5 | 13.89% |
| 7 | 6 | 16.67% (1 in 6) |
For three dice, 10 and 11 are the most likely totals at 12.5% each, and 18 comes up once in 216 rolls. The calculator works these chances out exactly for any number of dice by combining the faces one die at a time, and lists every total when the range is short enough to read.
Common rolls in games
| Roll | Range | Average | Used for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1d20 | 1–20 | 10.5 | attack rolls and checks in d20 games |
| 2d6 | 2–12 | 7 | board games such as Monopoly and Catan |
| 4d6, drop lowest | 3–18 | 12.24 | ability scores in tabletop role-playing games |
| 1d100 | 1–100 | 50.5 | percentile rolls |
| 3d6 | 3–18 | 10.5 | classic ability scores, many board games |
In 4d6 drop lowest, a perfect 18 needs the three highest dice all to be sixes: 21 of the 1,296 possible rolls, about 1.6%. To turn odds like 21/1296 into a decimal or percent yourself, use the fraction to decimal calculator.
How the dice are rolled
Each die uses your browser’s cryptographic random generator, the same source used for passwords. A die with n sides takes a random 32-bit number and keeps it only if it falls in the largest multiple of n below 2³², so no face is favored — the common shortcut of using a remainder slightly favors low faces. Rolls happen on your device; nothing is sent anywhere. For random numbers in a range, with or without repeats, use the random number generator; for a quick heads or tails, the coin flipper; and to turn odds into percentages, the percentage calculator.
