How to convert centimeters to meters

Divide the centimeters by 100:

meters = centimeters ÷ 100

Dividing by 100 moves the decimal point two places to the left. The common slip is moving it one or three places:

Meters and feet side by side

Metric sizes are easier to picture in U.S. units, so the result lists feet and inches too:

• 30 cm = 0.3 m = 11.8 in, just under a foot;
• 91.44 cm = 0.9144 m = 1 yard;
• 150 cm = 1.5 m = 4 ft 11 in;
• 200 cm = 2 m = 6 ft 6.7 in.

For inches as the main answer, use cm to inches; for heights in feet and inches, cm to feet and inches; for millimeters, cm to mm.

Where centimeters turn into meters

Product listings from Europe and Asia give furniture and room sizes in centimeters — a sofa 220 cm wide, a bed 160 × 200 cm. Plans and specifications switch to meters for anything bigger: a room 4.5 m long is 450 cm. Drawings at a scale of 1:100 make the switch easy, because 1 cm on paper is 1 m in reality.

To compare a metric size with a U.S. space, convert the meters to feet: 2.2 m is 7 ft 2.6 in. The meters to feet converter shows feet and inches to the nearest sixteenth.

Square centimeters to square meters

Areas need the squared factor: 1 m² = 100 cm × 100 cm = 10,000 cm². Divide square centimeters by 10,000:

• a 50 × 40 cm board: 2,000 cm² = 0.2 m²;
• an A4 sheet (21 × 29.7 cm): 623.7 cm² = 0.06237 m²;
• a 100 × 200 cm rug: 20,000 cm² = 2 m².

Dividing by 100 instead would make the area a hundred times too large.
