How to convert meters to feet

Divide the meters by 0.3048:

feet = meters ÷ 0.3048

3 m ÷ 0.3048 = 9.8425 ft, or 9.843 ft. Multiplying by 3.28084 gives the same answer to five digits. For the other direction, multiply feet by 0.3048 — the feet to meters converter also accepts feet and inches.

Reading the result on a tape measure

Decimal feet are easy to misread: 5.74 ft is not 5 ft 7.4 in — it is 5 ft 8.9 in, because a foot has 12 inches, not 10. The result gives three versions of the same length:

  • Decimal feet (9.843 ft) for calculations and spreadsheets;
  • Feet and inches (9 ft 10.1 in) with decimal inches;
  • Nearest 1/16 inch (9 ft 10 1/8 in), the finest mark on most tape measures.

For height in feet and inches as the main answer, see meters to feet and inches.

Meters in sports and buildings

Many familiar lengths are set in meters even in the U.S.:

  • Swimming pools: a 25 m pool is 82.02 ft; an Olympic 50 m pool is 164.04 ft. Short-course yard pools are 25 yd, or 75 ft.
  • Running tracks: one lap of a standard track is 400 m, 1,312.34 ft — 2.34 m (7.7 ft) short of a quarter mile.
  • Ceilings and floors: a building story is often quoted as about 3 m, which is 9 ft 10 1/8 in.

Square meters to square feet

Areas need the squared factor: 1 m² = 3.28084 × 3.28084 = 10.7639 sq ft. A 4 m × 5 m room (20 m²) is 215.28 sq ft, not 65.6. Apartment listings abroad give floor area in square meters; multiply by 10.7639 to compare with U.S. listings, or measure the room in feet with the square footage calculator.
