How to convert meters to miles
Divide the meters by 1,609.344:
miles = meters ÷ 1,609.344
5,000 m ÷ 1,609.344 = 3.107 mi. The divisor is exact: a mile is 1,760 yards, and a yard is 0.9144 m. For quick estimates, divide by 1,600 (0.6% high) — fine for a workout, not for a record.
Short distances give small numbers, so the converter keeps four significant digits: 100 m is 0.06214 mi, not 0.06. To see the same distance in kilometers, use meters to km; for kilometers to miles, km to miles.

1,600 meters is not a mile
Many U.S. high schools run the 1,600 m and 3,200 m instead of the mile and two-mile, because four and eight laps of a 400 m track are easy to measure. The distances are close but not equal: 1,600 m is 9.34 m short of a mile, and 3,200 m is 18.69 m short of two miles — roughly a second or two at race pace. Times from the two distances are often compared with a small adjustment rather than treated as the same.
Meters and miles on treadmills and rowers
Gym machines often let you pick units, and logs from different machines end up mixed. A treadmill set to miles and a rowing machine reporting meters can be compared once both are in the same unit: a 2,000 m row is 1.24 miles, a 30-minute treadmill run at 6 mph is 3 miles, or 4,828 m. For kilometers instead of meters, see miles to kilometers.
The mile here is the ordinary statute mile. A nautical mile, used at sea, is 1,852 m.
