Decimal hours on timesheets
Payroll and time-tracking apps record hours as decimals. To read them as a clock:
| Decimal hours | Hours and minutes |
|---|---|
| 0.1 | 6 min |
| 0.25 | 15 min |
| 0.4 | 24 min |
| 0.5 | 30 min |
| 0.75 | 45 min |
| 7.8 | 7 h 48 min |
| 8.5 | 8 h 30 min |
The most common mistake is reading 1.5 hours as 1 hour 50 minutes; it is 1 hour 30 minutes. Many employers round to tenths of an hour (6 minutes) or quarter hours (15 minutes). To add up hours worked from clock-in and clock-out times, use the hours calculator or the time card calculator.
Travel and cooking times
Flight durations, driving estimates and slow-cooker recipes are given in hours, often with decimals: a 2.75-hour drive is 2 hours 45 minutes, and a 6.5-hour braise is 6 hours 30 minutes. When planning arrival times, add the hours and minutes separately and carry 60 minutes into an hour; the time calculator does this for a whole list of steps and shows the clock time after each one. For the minutes in many hours at once — a week of shifts — paste the hours into Convert a list of values.
Billing in fractions of an hour
Lawyers, consultants and repair shops often bill in tenths or quarters of an hour. In tenths, every 6 minutes is 0.1 hour, so a 20-minute call is billed as 0.3 or 0.4 depending on the rounding rule; in quarters, it is 0.5 if rounded up to the next quarter. Converting the billed hours back to minutes — 0.3 hour is 18 minutes — shows how much time each line on an invoice stands for.
Hours, minutes and seconds
An hour is 60 minutes and 3,600 seconds; a day is 24 hours, 1,440 minutes and 86,400 seconds. For seconds, see days to seconds; for a whole day, how many minutes are in a day. To add durations like 1:45 and 2:30 together, the time calculator keeps hours and minutes separate.
