Quick answers and popular values

Each converter works in both directions: type in either field and the other one follows. The factors are exact definitions from NIST — 1 inch is 2.54 cm, 1 pound is 0.45359237 kg, 1 U.S. gallon is 231 cubic inches — so results match any correct reference to the last digit, and only the rounding is yours to choose.

More than one number

Every converter also shows the answer in mixed units where people use them (pounds and ounces, kilograms and grams, feet and inches, stone and pounds), the nearest sixteenth of an inch for tape measures, and the measuring cups for kitchen volumes. It converts a pasted list of values with a CSV download and keeps your value in the page link, so you can share or bookmark it.

Some values are searched so often that they have their own page — 80 kg to lbs, 150 lbs to kg, 5 feet 7 inches to cm — with nearby values, a mental rule and, for heights, where the height falls among U.S. adults according to CDC data. Questions such as how many ounces are in a pound get a direct answer with the common mix-ups explained. They are listed above under the converter they belong to.

U.S., UK and metric units

Where the same name means different amounts, the converter says which one it uses and lets you switch: U.S. and UK gallons and fluid ounces, liquid and dry quarts, U.S., metric and long tons. Temperatures show the formula worked out with your number, and areas show the side of an equal square.

Frequently asked questions

Where do the conversion factors come from?

From NIST Special Publication 811. Factors such as 1 inch = 2.54 cm and 1 pound = 0.45359237 kg are exact by definition; others are given to at least 10 significant figures.

Why show a table when I can type a value?

Tables answer the next question before you ask it — nearby sizes, common recipe amounts, typical body weights — and they print cleanly for a workshop or kitchen.

Are U.S. and imperial (UK) units the same?

Not always. A U.S. gallon is 3.785 L; a UK gallon is 4.546 L. Our converters use U.S. customary units unless labelled otherwise.
