How to convert feet to centimeters

Multiply the feet by 30.48, and add 2.54 cm for every inch:

centimeters = feet × 30.48 + inches × 2.54

5 ft 7 in = 5 × 30.48 + 7 × 2.54 = 152.4 + 17.78 = 170.18 cm. Type the feet and the inches into their own fields; the result also gives meters and total inches. Both factors are exact, so the answer is exact before rounding.

For meters as the main result — rooms, ceilings, building heights — use feet to meters. For inches alone, inches to centimeters; and to go from centimeters back to feet and inches, centimeters to feet and inches.

Rounding a height for a form

Forms that ask for height in centimeters almost always want a whole number. Round to the nearest centimeter — 172.72 cm becomes 173 cm — rather than cutting off the decimals, which would make everyone up to a centimeter shorter. If a form wants meters, write two decimals: 173 cm is 1.73 m.
