How to convert feet to yards

Divide the feet by 3:

yards = feet ÷ 3

27 ft ÷ 3 = 9 yd. When the feet do not divide evenly, the decimal repeats: 10 ft ÷ 3 = 3.333 yd. The converter also shows yards and feet — 3 yd 1 ft — which is easier to measure out. To go back, multiply yards by 3, or type yards into the second field.

Square feet to square yards

Carpet and some flooring are priced per square yard. A square yard is 3 ft × 3 ft = 9 sq ft, so divide square feet by 9, not by 3:

Mulch, gravel, topsoil and concrete are sold by the cubic yard — 3 × 3 × 3 = 27 cubic feet. Divide cubic feet by 27: a bed 10 ft × 8 ft × 3 in deep (0.25 ft) holds 20 cu ft, which is 0.74 cu yd. The cubic yards calculator does this from length, width and depth, with waste.
