Dates are calendar days — no time of day, so daylight-saving changes never shift the count. “Today” is your device’s date.

Should you count the end date?

A plain subtraction — the end date minus the start date — counts the start date and stops before the end date. That is the main number above. Add 1 when the last day is a full day too. Both numbers are always on the screen, so you only need to pick the right one:

Situation Usual count Example Days
Days until an event end not counted Oct 6 → Dec 25, 2026 80
How old something is, days since end not counted Jan 1 → Oct 6, 2026 278
Leave, vacation, sick days both dates Dec 21, 2026 → Jan 1, 2027 12 (8 business days)
Hotel stay nights = end not counted check in Jun 1, out Jun 5 4 nights
Lease or contract “from … through …” both dates Feb 15, 2026 → Feb 14, 2027 365 (1 year)
Summer break, June through August both dates Jun 1 → Aug 31, 2026 92

If two tools disagree by one day, this is almost always why.

How to count the days yourself

  1. Finish the first month. From March 20 to March 31 is 11 days (31 − 20).
  2. Add the whole months in between at their real length: April 30, May 31.
  3. Add the day of the last month. To June 10, add 10.
  4. Add it up: 11 + 30 + 31 + 10 = 82 days, end date not counted. Add 1 if it should be.

The calculator does the same with day numbers for each date, so it is exact across years, leap days and daylight-saving changes. Open How it’s calculated under the answer to see each step.

Business days and federal holidays

Business days are Monday to Friday. With Skip federal holidays on, the 11 U.S. federal holidays are taken out on the day they are observed:

Holiday Rule 2026 2027 2028
New Year’s Day January 1 Thu, Jan 1 Fri, Jan 1 Fri, Dec 31, 2027 ¹
Martin Luther King Jr. Day 3rd Monday in January Jan 19 Jan 18 Jan 17

Memorial Day last Monday in May May 25 May 31 May 29
Juneteenth June 19 Fri, Jun 19 Fri, Jun 18 ¹ Mon, Jun 19
Independence Day July 4 Fri, Jul 3 ¹ Mon, Jul 5 ¹ Tue, Jul 4
Labor Day 1st Monday in September Sep 7 Sep 6 Sep 4
Columbus Day 2nd Monday in October Oct 12 Oct 11 Oct 9
Veterans Day November 11 Wed, Nov 11 Thu, Nov 11 Fri, Nov 10 ¹
Thanksgiving Day 4th Thursday in November Nov 26 Nov 25 Nov 23
Christmas Day December 25 Fri, Dec 25 Fri, Dec 24 ¹ Mon, Dec 25

¹ The holiday falls on a weekend, so the day off moves: Saturday to the Friday before, Sunday to the Monday after (5 U.S.C. 6103, OPM). When January 1 is a Saturday, the day off is December 31 of the year before.

Rules from the U.S. Naval Observatory and OPM. State holidays (such as Cesar Chavez Day or Patriots’ Day) and company days off are not included. Holidays are counted from 1986, the first year all of today’s federal holidays except Juneteenth (2021) were in place.

Weeks and months between dates

  • Weeks are days ÷ 7: 358 days is 51 weeks and 1 day.
  • Months are counted the way a calendar does: from January 1, the 1st of each next month is one more month, and the days left over come last. January 1 to December 25 is 11 months and 24 days.
  • Month ends: a start on the 31st lands on the last day of shorter months. January 31 to March 1, 2026 is 1 month (to February 28) and 1 day — 29 days in all.

Prorating rent or pay by the day

Moving in partway through a month, landlords usually charge the days you live there out of the days in that month. Moving in on October 20 with $1,550 rent: October 20 → 31, both dates counted, is 12 days, so the rent is 1,550 × 12 ÷ 31 = $600. The fraction calculator keeps 12/31 exact, and the share of the month — 38.7% — is one step in the percentage calculator. Some leases divide by 30 or by 365 ÷ 12 instead; the lease says which.

Days in each month and leap years

Days Months
31 January, March, May, July, August, October, December
30 April, June, September, November
28 or 29 February

February has 29 days in a leap year: every year divisible by 4, except century years that are not divisible by 400. So 2024 and 2028 are leap years, 2000 was, and 1900 and 2100 are not (U.S. Naval Observatory). A year is 365 days, or 366 in a leap year.

Days between dates in Excel and Google Sheets

Want Formula (dates in A1 and B1) Jan 1 → Dec 25, 2026
Days, end not counted =B1-A1 358
Days, both counted =B1-A1+1 359
Weekdays =NETWORKDAYS(A1,B1) 257
Business days without holidays =NETWORKDAYS(A1,B1,H1:H11) 246
Whole months =DATEDIF(A1,B1,"m") 11

NETWORKDAYS counts both the start and the end date, so it matches this calculator with Count the end date too switched on. Put the observed holiday dates from the table above in H1:H11. Microsoft notes that DATEDIF “may calculate incorrect results under certain scenarios”, so check month counts here.

Counting days for deadlines

Many deadlines are counted differently from a calendar subtraction. Courts in the U.S. usually leave out the day of the event, count every day after it including weekends, and move the last day forward if it falls on a weekend or holiday. Rules vary by court and by state, so read the rule that applies to you — this calculator counts calendar days and business days, not legal deadlines.

To find the date a set number of days away — 90 days from today, 10 business days after an order — the date calculator is on the way, along with a time duration calculator for hours and minutes between two dates and times. To turn a count into a share of a year or a deadline, the percentage calculator does the division: 80 days out of 365 is 21.9%.

Frequently asked questions

Does a days-between count include the start and end date?

The usual count — the one you get by subtracting dates — includes the start date but not the end date, so Monday to Friday is 4 days. If both dates should count, as on a leave request or for an event that runs through the last day, add 1: Monday to Friday is 5 days. This calculator always shows both numbers.

How many business days are between two dates?

Count Monday to Friday, then take out holidays that fall on weekdays. January 1 to December 25, 2026 has 358 days, 256 weekdays and 10 federal holidays on weekdays, so 246 business days. Switch off the holiday option if your employer works on federal holidays.

How do I count weeks between two dates?

Divide the number of days by 7. The whole number is the weeks and the remainder is the extra days: 80 days is 11 weeks and 3 days.

What happens when a holiday falls on a weekend?

For federal employees with a Monday–Friday week, a Saturday holiday is observed on the Friday before and a Sunday holiday on the Monday after (5 U.S.C. 6103). Independence Day 2026 is a Saturday, so the day off is Friday, July 3. Most private employers follow the same rule, but check your company calendar.

How do I calculate days between dates in Excel?

Subtract the cells: =B1-A1 gives the days with the end date not counted, =B1-A1+1 counts both. For business days use =NETWORKDAYS(A1,B1,H1:H11) with a list of holidays in H1:H11; note that NETWORKDAYS counts both the start and end date.

Why does my count differ by one day from another calculator?

Almost always because one tool counts the end date and the other does not. Compare with the second number on this page. The other common causes are a holiday list that uses the actual date instead of the observed day off, and formulas that use date-and-time values across a daylight-saving change.
