How to convert hourly pay to salary
Multiply the hourly rate by the hours you work in a week and by the weeks you are paid in a year:
annual salary = hourly rate × hours per week × paid weeks
$20 × 40 × 52 = $41,600. Divide the year to get each pay period: ÷ 12 for a month ($3,466.67), ÷ 24 for semimonthly ($1,733.33), ÷ 26 for biweekly ($1,600), ÷ 52 for a week ($800). A day is the weekly pay divided by the days you work — $160 for five 8-hour days.
A quick estimate is to double the hourly rate and add three zeros: $20 → about $40,000. It runs about 4% low because a full-time year is 2,080 hours, not 2,000.
Don’t multiply the weekly pay by 4 to get a month: a month averages 52 ÷ 12 = 4.33 weeks, so $800 × 4 = $3,200 misses $266.67 a month.
Hourly wages as yearly salaries
Full time is 40 hours a week and 52 paid weeks:
| Hourly | Yearly | Monthly | Biweekly | Weekly |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $15 | $31,200 | $2,600 | $1,200 | $600 |
| $18 | $37,440 | $3,120 | $1,440 | $720 |
| $20 | $41,600 | $3,466.67 | $1,600 | $800 |
| $22 | $45,760 | $3,813.33 | $1,760 | $880 |
| $25 | $52,000 | $4,333.33 | $2,000 | $1,000 |
| $30 | $62,400 | $5,200 | $2,400 | $1,200 |
| $35 | $72,800 | $6,066.67 | $2,800 | $1,400 |
| $40 | $83,200 | $6,933.33 | $3,200 | $1,600 |
| $50 | $104,000 | $8,666.67 | $4,000 | $2,000 |
For part-time hours, change Hours per week: $15 an hour at 20 hours a week is $15,600 a year.
Salary to hourly: 2,080 or 2,087 hours
Going the other way, divide the salary by the paid hours in a year. With 40 hours a week that is 2,080 hours:
| Salary | ÷ 2,080 | ÷ 2,087 (federal) |
|---|---|---|
| $50,000 | $24.04 | $23.96 |
| $60,000 | $28.85 | $28.75 |
| $75,000 | $36.06 | $35.94 |
| $100,000 | $48.08 | $47.92 |
Federal agencies use 2,087 hours by law (5 U.S.C. 5504) — the average paid hours in a year over a 28-year cycle that includes leap years. The calculator shows that rate under the result when you convert from a salary.
When you compare a salaried offer with an hourly job, use the hours you will really work: $60,000 for 50 hours a week is $23.08 an hour, less than a $25 hourly job at 40 hours with overtime paid on top.
Paid time off and unpaid days
Paid vacation and paid holidays don’t change a yearly salary — you are paid for those weeks, so keep Weeks per year at 52. Enter only the days you will not be paid for in Unpaid days off a year:
- $20 an hour with 10 unpaid days: 52 − 10 ÷ 5 = 50 paid weeks, $40,000 a year.
- With 25 unpaid days (10 holidays and 15 vacation days, all unpaid): 47 paid weeks, $37,600 — the number some salary calculators show as “adjusted” by default.
Seasonal or school-year jobs: set Weeks per year to the weeks you actually work, such as 40.
Overtime in a yearly salary
If you regularly work more than 40 hours, open More options and enter the overtime hours per week. Federal law pays them at least 1.5 times the regular rate (29 U.S.C. 207):
$25 an hour, 40 hours plus 5 hours of overtime, 10 unpaid days:
- Regular pay: $25 × 40 × 50 weeks = $50,000
- Overtime: 5 × $25 × 1.5 × 50 weeks = $9,375
- Yearly: $59,375
For one week’s pay from a real schedule — or California’s daily overtime — use the overtime calculator. To add up the hours first, use the work hours calculator, or keep a dated record with the time card calculator.
Pay periods: biweekly vs semimonthly
| Pay period | Paychecks a year | On $60,000 |
|---|---|---|
| Weekly | 52 | $1,153.85 |
| Biweekly (every other week) | 26 | $2,307.69 |
| Semimonthly (twice a month) | 24 | $2,500 |
| Monthly | 12 | $5,000 |
Biweekly checks are smaller than semimonthly ones, but there are two more of them, so the year comes out the same. With biweekly pay, two months a year have three paydays. To compare two offers, look at the difference in percent with the percentage calculator.
All amounts here are gross pay, before taxes and deductions.
