How to calculate a tip

Multiply the bill by the tip rate written as a decimal, then add the tip to the bill:

tip = bill × rate, total = bill + tip

18% of $86.40 is 86.40 × 0.18 = 15.552, which rounds to $15.55, so the total is $101.95. The calculator rounds the tip to the cent, half up. For a quick tip in your head, find 10% by moving the decimal point one place left — $8.64 — then double it for 20% ($17.28), or add half of it for 15% ($12.96).

Tip before or after tax?

Etiquette guides such as the Emily Post Institute suggest tipping on the bill before sales tax, because the tax is not part of the service. On a check of $86.40 that includes $5.80 of tax, a 20% tip on the $80.60 before tax is $16.12, against $17.28 on the whole amount. Enter the tax line from the receipt and keep Tip on the amount before tax on; turn it off to tip on the full total.

Tip On $50 On $80 On $120
15% $7.50 $12.00 $18.00
18% $9.00 $14.40 $21.60
20% $10.00 $16.00 $24.00
22% $11.00 $17.60 $26.40
25% $12.50 $20.00 $30.00

Splitting the bill so it adds up

A total does not always divide evenly. $101.95 among three people is $33.9833…; if everyone pays $33.98 the check is one cent short, and many calculators show $33.98 each without saying so. This one splits in whole cents: two people pay $33.98 and one pays $33.99, which adds up to $101.95 exactly. If you would rather settle in round numbers, choose Round up: Each share — everyone pays $34.00, the total becomes $102.00 and the tip rises to $15.60, about 18.1%. Rounding up the tip or the total works the same way and shows the tip as a percentage after rounding.

How much to tip in the U.S.

Tipping customs are guidance, not rules. These are the ranges in the Emily Post Institute’s general tipping guide:

Service Usual tip
Sit-down restaurant 15–20% of the pre-tax bill
Buffet 10% of the pre-tax bill
Bar $1–2 per drink, or 15–20% of the tab
Food delivery 10–15% of the bill; $2–5 for pizza
Taxi 15–20% of the fare, at least $1
Hair salon 15–20%
Takeout no obligation; 10% for curbside service or a large, complicated order

Some restaurants add an automatic gratuity for large parties; it appears on the receipt as “gratuity” or “service charge”, so check before adding another tip. Under federal law, tips belong to the employee, and an employer may count part of them toward the minimum wage of tipped workers (U.S. Department of Labor). For other percentage questions, use the percentage calculator; for sale prices with tax, percent off; and to compare hourly pay with a salary, the hourly to salary calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate a tip?

Multiply the bill by the tip rate: 18% of $86.40 is 86.40 × 0.18 = $15.55. Add it to the bill for the total, $101.95.

How much is a 20% tip?

Move the decimal point one place left and double it: on a $64 bill, 10% is $6.40 and 20% is $12.80.

Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?

Etiquette guides usually say before tax. Enter the tax from the receipt and keep "Tip on the amount before tax" on, and the tip is taken on the food and drinks only.

How do I split the bill evenly?

Divide the total by the number of people. If it does not divide to the cent, some people pay one cent more; the calculator shows exactly who, or rounds each share up to a whole dollar.

How much should I tip at a restaurant?

15% to 20% of the pre-tax bill at a sit-down restaurant, according to the Emily Post Institute; 10% at a buffet.

Is the tip included for large groups?

Some restaurants add an automatic gratuity for large parties, listed on the receipt as gratuity or a service charge. Check the receipt before adding another tip.
