How the date calculator counts

  1. Pick the start date. It starts on today’s date on your device.
  2. Choose Add or Subtract, and Calendar days or Business days.
  3. Enter the period. In calendar mode you can mix years, months, weeks and days — the calculator adds the years and months first, then the weeks and days.
  4. Read the answer: the weekday and date, the same date as 1/5/2027 and 2027-01-05 for forms and spreadsheets, how many calendar days away it is, and every step under How it’s calculated.

The start date itself is never counted: 1 day after Monday is Tuesday. The table under the calculator shows the common deadlines from your start date at a glance; Share copies a link that opens the same calculation.

Adding months: what happens at the end of a month

Months have 28 to 31 days, so adding a month keeps the same day number — and when that day does not exist, uses the last day of the month:

Start Period Result Why
Jan 31, 2026 + 1 month Sat, Feb 28, 2026 February 2026 has 28 days
Mar 31, 2026 − 1 month Sat, Feb 28, 2026 same rule, backwards
May 31, 2026 + 1 month Tue, Jun 30, 2026 June has 30 days
Aug 31, 2026 + 6 months Sun, Feb 28, 2027 2027 is not a leap year
Feb 29, 2024 + 1 year Fri, Feb 28, 2025 2025 has no February 29
Jan 31, 2026 + 30 days Mon, Mar 2, 2026 days, not months

When this happens the calculator says so under the answer. timeanddate, calculator.net and Excel’s EDATE give the same dates. February has 29 days in leap years — every year divisible by 4, except century years not divisible by 400 (U.S. Naval Observatory).

Business days and federal holidays

In Business days mode the calculator walks forward (or back) one day at a time from the day after your start date, counting only Monday to Friday. With Skip federal holidays on, it also skips the 11 U.S. federal holidays on the day they are observed: a Saturday holiday on the Friday before and a Sunday holiday on the Monday after (5 U.S.C. 6103, OPM). The answer is always a business day, and the holidays it skipped are listed.

Start Business days Result Skipped
Fri, Nov 20, 2026 + 10 Mon, Dec 7, 2026 6 weekend days, Thanksgiving (Thu, Nov 26)
Wed, Oct 7, 2026 + 5 Thu, Oct 15, 2026 2 weekend days, Columbus Day (Mon, Oct 12)
Tue, Dec 22, 2026 + 3 Mon, Dec 28, 2026 Christmas (Fri, Dec 25), 2 weekend days
Mon, Jan 4, 2027 − 5 Thu, Dec 24, 2026 New Year’s Day (Fri, Jan 1), Christmas, 2 weekend days

Some calculators count the start date as the first business day and can land on a Saturday; others use the holidays of the country your internet connection appears to be in. State holidays and company days off are not included here — switch the holiday option off if your workplace stays open on federal holidays. For the business days between two dates, use the days between dates calculator.

Common deadlines

Deadline Usually means From Wed, Oct 7, 2026
Net 30 invoice 30 calendar days Fri, Nov 6, 2026
30-day notice 30 calendar days Fri, Nov 6, 2026
1 month same day next month Sat, Nov 7, 2026
60 days 60 calendar days Sun, Dec 6, 2026
90-day return window 90 calendar days Tue, Jan 5, 2027
3 months same day, 3 months on Thu, Jan 7, 2027
180 days 180 calendar days Mon, Apr 5, 2027
6 months same day, 6 months on Wed, Apr 7, 2027
10 business days Mon–Fri, no federal holidays Thu, Oct 22, 2026

When a deadline falls on a weekend, many businesses and offices move it to the next business day — check the terms that apply. If you need a share of a period, the percentage calculator does the division: 30 days out of a 90-day window is 33.3%. For a bill that covers part of a month — 25 days of a 30-day month is 25/30 — the fraction calculator reduces it to 5/6.

Adding days in Excel and Google Sheets

Want Formula (date in A1) From Oct 7, 2026
Add 90 days =A1+90 Jan 5, 2027
Subtract 45 days =A1-45 Aug 23, 2026
Add 6 months =EDATE(A1,6) Apr 7, 2027
Add 1 year =EDATE(A1,12) Oct 7, 2027
Add 10 business days =WORKDAY(A1,10,H1:H11) Oct 22, 2026

Format the result cell as a date. WORKDAY needs the holiday dates in a range (H1:H11 here): use the observed days from OPM’s list. Google Sheets has the same functions.

Court rules and contracts often have their own counting rules: courts in the U.S. usually leave out the day of the event, count every calendar day after it, and move a deadline that lands on a weekend or holiday to the next business day. Rules differ by court, state and contract, so read the one that applies — this calculator adds calendar days and business days; it does not give legal advice.

For hours and minutes between two dates and times, a time duration calculator is on the way.

Frequently asked questions

What date is 90 days from today?

Leave the start date on Today and tap 90 days. From October 7, 2026, 90 days later is Tuesday, January 5, 2027. The table under the calculator lists 30, 60, 90 and 180 days, 6 months and 1 year from the same date.

How do I add business days to a date?

Switch to Business days and enter the number. The calculator starts from the day after your date and counts only Monday to Friday, skipping U.S. federal holidays on the day they are observed. 10 business days after Friday, November 20, 2026 is Monday, December 7 — six weekend days and Thanksgiving are skipped.

What is one month after January 31?

February 28 (February 29 in a leap year). February has no 31st, so the date moves to the last day of the month — the same rule timeanddate, calculator.net and Excel's EDATE use. One month after March 31 is April 30.

Is 30 days the same as one month?

No. A month is 28 to 31 days. From January 31, 2026, 30 days later is March 2 but one month later is February 28. If a contract, bill or notice says days, count days; if it says a month, count months.

Does the start date count?

No. Adding 1 day to Monday gives Tuesday, and 1 business day after a Friday is the next Monday. If your rule counts the start date as day 1, subtract one day (or one business day) from the number you enter.

How do I add days to a date in Excel?

Dates are numbers in Excel, so =A1+90 adds 90 days. Use =EDATE(A1,6) for 6 months and =WORKDAY(A1,10,H1:H11) for 10 business days, with your holiday dates in H1:H11. WORKDAY also starts counting the day after A1, so it matches this calculator.
