How 3 months are counted

Keep the day of the month and move the month forward by three: October 7 becomes January 7. The weekday changes, because three months are not a whole number of weeks. When the target month is shorter than the starting day — from August 31, for example — the answer is the last day of that month, November 30. That is the rule spreadsheets use with EDATE and most contracts follow; the calculator applies it automatically.

3 months, 90 days or 13 weeks?

The three forms land within a few days of each other, but rules that say “90 days” count days, not months. Over the winter holidays the business-day count falls further behind: five federal holidays sit between October 7, 2026 and January 7, 2027.

Common 3-month periods

• Probation and trial periods: a 3-month probation that starts today usually ends on the date shown; some employers write it as 90 days, which ends two days earlier from this date.
• Quarters: 3 months is a quarter, but calendar quarters start on January 1, April 1, July 1 and October 1; three months from today is a rolling quarter, not a calendar one.
• Subscriptions and plans: a quarterly plan bought today renews on the same day number three months on, or on the last day of a shorter month.

Checking the date by hand

Keep the day number and move the month forward by 3: from October 7 that gives January 7 of the next year. If the target month is shorter than the start month — counting from the 31st, for example — take its last day instead, the way spreadsheets and most contracts do. The number of days in between is not fixed; the table above shows it for today’s date, together with the weekdays and holidays in the span, which matters when a deadline must land on a business day.
