Methodology

A calculator is only useful if its number is right. This page explains how we make sure of that.

1. The formula comes from a primary source

Before a calculator is built we write a research brief that records the formula and where it comes from. Acceptable sources, in order of preference:

We never copy a formula from another calculator website. We do run the same inputs through several competing tools and explain any difference (rounding, waste allowances, density assumptions) in the brief.

2. Reference examples become automated tests

Each brief lists at least five worked examples, at least two of them taken directly from the primary source. These examples are written as automated tests that run every time the site is rebuilt. If a change breaks a result, the site does not publish.

Tests also cover edge cases: zero and negative inputs, very large numbers, mixed units, midnight and year boundaries for time and date tools, leap days and daylight-saving changes.

3. Assumptions are visible and editable

When a result depends on an assumption — the density of crushed stone, a 10 % waste allowance, a 40-hour work week — the page shows the value and lets you change it. The “How it's calculated” panel shows the formula with your numbers substituted so you can check it by hand.

4. Rounding and precision

Calculations run at full precision; only the displayed result is rounded. Quantities you buy in whole units (bags, gallons, sheets) are rounded up. Money is shown to the cent. Each page states its rounding rule in the formula section.

5. Data that ages

Tax tables, contribution limits, minimum wages, holidays and material prices change. Each such data set has a source, a “checked on” date, and a scheduled review (usually January, or when the law changes). The page's “Last updated” date reflects the latest verified change.

6. Review for money and health topics

Calculators about finance, taxes, health and fitness are reviewed by a qualified professional before publication and carry a disclaimer. Reviewers are named on the page and profiled on the Authors page.

7. Corrections

If you find an error, use the contact page. We verify, fix, add a test so it cannot return, and update the page date.
