Cubic Feet to Cubic Yards (ft³ to yd³)
A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, so 54 ft³ is 2 yd³ and 100 ft³ is 3.7 yd³. Gallons and cubic meters are shown too.

How to convert cubic feet to cubic yards
Divide the cubic feet by 27:
yd³ = ft³ ÷ 27
100 ft³ ÷ 27 = 3.70 yd³. The divisor is exact: a yard is 3 feet, so a cube one yard on each side holds 3 × 3 × 3 = 27 cubic feet. It is not 3 — that would convert a length, not a volume. The result also shows gallons and cubic meters. To go the other way, multiply cubic yards by 27.

Bags, bulk and dumpsters
| Item | Cubic feet | Cubic yards |
|---|---|---|
| Bag of mulch or soil | 2 ft³ | 0.074 yd³ (13.5 bags per yard) |
| Large bag | 3 ft³ | 0.111 yd³ (9 bags per yard) |
| Pickup truck bed (full size) | about 54 ft³ | about 2 yd³ |
| 10-yard dumpster | 270 ft³ | 10 yd³ |
| 20-yard dumpster | 540 ft³ | 20 yd³ |
Garden centers sell bags by the cubic foot and bulk by the cubic yard. Comparing the two, 13.5 bags of 2 ft³ equal one yard; if a yard delivered costs less than about 14 bags, bulk is cheaper. For the volume needed over a bed or a driveway, start with the area and depth in the cubic yards calculator, or the mulch calculator, which also counts bags.
Concrete and gravel
Concrete is ordered by the cubic yard. A slab 10 × 10 ft and 4 inches thick is 33.3 ft³, or 1.23 yd³; a 60-lb bag of premix makes about 0.45 ft³, so bags add up quickly. The concrete calculator converts slabs, footings and columns and adds waste. For gravel by weight, the gravel calculator gives tons as well.
Measuring the space first
Most volume questions start with a length, a width and a depth in different units: a bed 12 feet by 4 feet, mulched 3 inches deep. Convert the depth to feet first — 3 inches is 0.25 ft — then multiply: 12 × 4 × 0.25 = 12 ft³, or 0.44 yd³. For the area part, the square footage calculator handles rooms and beds of several shapes, and feet to inches converts the depth. Round the yards up to the next quarter or half: suppliers deliver in those steps.
Cubic meters and gallons
A cubic yard is 0.7646 cubic meters and a cubic meter is 1.308 cubic yards. A cubic foot holds 7.48 U.S. gallons, so a cubic yard is 202 gallons — useful for ponds and tanks. For volumes of other shapes, see the volume calculator.
