How to convert liters to gallons

Divide the liters by 3.785411784:

U.S. gallons = liters ÷ 3.785411784

50 L ÷ 3.785 = 13.21 gal. The U.S. gallon is defined as exactly 231 cubic inches, which is 3.785411784 liters, so the factor is exact. The result also lists UK gallons, quarts and fluid ounces. To go the other way, multiply gallons by 3.785, or use the gallons to liters converter.

Fuel: price per liter to price per gallon

Abroad, fuel is priced per liter. To compare with U.S. prices, multiply by 3.785:

  • 1.80 per liter × 3.785 = 6.81 per gallon;
  • 1.50 per liter × 3.785 = 5.68 per gallon.

Convert the currency separately. Fuel economy is often quoted in liters per 100 km, which runs the other way from miles per gallon: 7 L/100 km is 33.6 mpg, and a lower L/100 km figure means a more efficient car. A 50-liter tank holds 13.2 U.S. gallons.

How much a gallon of water weighs

A liter of water weighs about 1 kg, so volume gives weight directly: a U.S. gallon of water weighs about 3.785 kg, or 8.34 lb, and a 20-liter jug about 20 kg (44 lb). That is the number to check before lifting a full aquarium or loading a trailer — for other weights, use kilograms to pounds. Fuel is lighter than water: gasoline weighs roughly three-quarters as much per liter.

On a road trip abroad, distances are in kilometers as well as fuel in liters; km to miles converts the distance side.

US and UK gallons

The United States kept the old wine gallon of 231 cubic inches; the United Kingdom redefined its gallon in 1824 and now fixes it at 4.54609 liters. The UK gallon is about 20% larger, and its pints, quarts and fluid ounces differ too. U.S. recipes, fuel and product labels use U.S. gallons; older British sources and some Canadian fuel figures use imperial gallons. For fluid ounces, see liters to ounces.

Frequently asked questions

How many gallons is 1 liter?

0.2642 U.S. gallons, or 0.22 UK gallons. A liter is a little more than a U.S. quart (1.057 qt).

How many gallons is 20 liters?

5.283 U.S. gallons (4.399 UK gallons) — the size of a common water jug or fuel can.

How many liters are in a gallon?

3.785411784 liters in a U.S. gallon, exactly — the gallon is defined as 231 cubic inches. A UK (imperial) gallon is 4.54609 liters.

Is a UK gallon the same as a US gallon?

No. The UK imperial gallon is 4.546 L, about 20% bigger than the U.S. gallon of 3.785 L. Fuel economy in miles per gallon is therefore higher in UK figures than in U.S. ones for the same car.

How do I convert a price per liter to a price per gallon?

Multiply the price per liter by 3.785. Fuel at 1.80 per liter costs 6.81 per U.S. gallon in the same currency; convert the currency separately.

Is 4 liters a gallon?

Almost: 4 L is 1.057 U.S. gallons. A gallon is 3.785 L, so a 4-liter jug holds about 5% more than a gallon jug.
