How to convert liters to quarts
Multiply the liters by 1.05669, or divide by 0.946353:
qt = L ÷ 0.946352946
5 L ÷ 0.946353 = 5.28 qt. The divisor is exact: a U.S. liquid quart is 0.946352946 liter by definition. The result also shows gallons, fluid ounces and cups. To go the other way, use quarts to liters.

Motor oil in liters and quarts
Engine oil is sold in 1-liter, 4-liter and 5-liter containers outside the U.S. and in quarts at home, while European and Asian car manuals give capacities in liters. Converting the capacity tells you how much to buy:
| Capacity in the manual | Quarts | Buy in quarts |
|---|---|---|
| 3.5 L | 3.70 qt | 4 qt |
| 4.0 L | 4.23 qt | 5 qt (or 4 qt and check the dipstick) |
| 4.5 L | 4.76 qt | 5 qt |
| 5.0 L | 5.28 qt | 6 qt |
| 6.0 L | 6.34 qt | 7 qt |
Because a liter is slightly more than a quart, the number of quarts is always a little higher than the number of liters; round up to whole bottles and top off to the dipstick mark.
Bottles and kitchen measures
A 1-liter bottle holds 1.06 quarts, a 2-liter soda bottle 2.11 quarts — just over half a gallon — and a 750 mL wine bottle 0.79 quart. In a recipe, the 6% difference rarely matters for soups and stocks; for baking, measure in the units the recipe uses. For cups as the main answer, see liters to mL and ounces to cups; for gallons, liters to gallons.
A quick rule for your head
Add 5% and a little more: 4 liters plus 5% is 4.2, and the exact answer is 4.23 quarts. Going the other way, take 5% off quarts to get liters. For a gallon-sized estimate, remember that 4 liters is just over a gallon (1.057 gallons), so a 4-liter jug of oil, water or coolant replaces a gallon jug with a little to spare. To convert a list of capacities — several vehicles, or the jugs in a garage — open Convert a list of values and paste the liters one per line.
U.S. and UK quarts
This page uses the U.S. liquid quart. The British imperial quart is larger, 1.137 liters, so 1 liter is only 0.88 UK quarts; the U.S. dry quart for produce is 1.101 liters. When a British recipe says a quart, use 1.14 liters.
