Ounces to Cups (fl oz to cups)

A U.S. cup is 8 fluid ounces, so 12 fl oz is 1 1/2 cups and 6 fl oz is 3/4 cup. The result shows the measuring cups to use.

How to convert fluid ounces to cups

Divide the fluid ounces by 8:

cups = fluid ounces ÷ 8

12 fl oz ÷ 8 = 1.5 cups. Measuring cups come in 1/4, 1/3, 1/2 and 1 cup, so the converter also shows the result as you would measure it: 1 1/2 cups. 6 fl oz is 3/4 cup; 10 fl oz is 1 1/4 cups. To go the other way, multiply cups by 8 — type the cups into the second field.

2 fl oz 0.25 1/4 cup
2.67 fl oz 0.333 1/3 cup
4 fl oz 0.5 1/2 cup

24 fl oz 3 3 cups
32 fl oz 4 4 cups (1 quart)

For amounts under 1/4 cup, switch to spoons: 1 fl oz is 2 tablespoons, and 1/2 fl oz is 1 tablespoon (3 teaspoons). To convert a whole recipe, open Convert a list of values and paste the fluid ounces one per line.

Ounces of weight are not cups

Recipes give dry ingredients in ounces of weight, and a cup measures volume, so there is no single conversion. A cup of each weighs (King Arthur Baking):

Ingredient 1 cup weighs 8 oz by weight is about
All-purpose flour 4 1/4 oz (120 g) 1 7/8 cups
Granulated sugar 7 oz (198 g) 1 1/8 cups
Butter 8 oz (227 g) 1 cup
Honey 12 oz (340 g) 2/3 cup

Only for water-like liquids are 8 oz by weight close to a cup. Measure liquids in a clear measuring cup at eye level, and dry ingredients in nested cups leveled off with a knife. For baking, weigh the dry ingredients — the ounces to grams converter helps when the scale is metric.

U.S., metric and label cups

Three “cups” are in use: the U.S. customary cup of 236.6 mL, the nutrition-label cup of 240 mL set by the FDA, and the metric cup of 250 mL used in Canada, Australia and many recipes from abroad. The result shows all three. For milliliters as the main answer, use ounces to mL; for larger measures, quarts to cups.

Frequently asked questions

How many cups is 8 oz?

1 cup, if the 8 oz are fluid ounces (a liquid). A U.S. cup is 8 fluid ounces, or 236.6 mL.

How many cups is 12 oz?

1 1/2 cups of a liquid — the contents of a 12 fl oz can.

Is 8 oz of flour a cup?

No. Ounces of flour are weight, cups are volume. A cup of all-purpose flour weighs about 4 1/4 oz (120 g), so 8 oz of flour is close to 2 cups. Weigh dry ingredients, or use the ingredient table below.

How many oz in a cup?

8 U.S. fluid ounces. Half a cup is 4 fl oz and a quarter cup 2 fl oz.

How many cups is a 14.5 oz can?

For a liquid such as broth, 14.5 fl oz is 1.81 cups — just over 1 3/4 cups. Canned solids are labeled by weight, so their volume depends on what is inside.

Is a metric cup the same as a U.S. cup?

No. A metric cup is 250 mL; a U.S. cup is 236.6 mL, and nutrition labels use 240 mL. The difference is about 6%, small for soup but noticeable in baking.
