How to convert quarts to cups

Multiply the quarts by 4:

cups = quarts × 4

1.5 qt × 4 = 6 cups. The factor is exact: a U.S. quart is 2 pints, and a pint is 2 cups. For fractions of a quart, the converter also shows the answer as measuring cups — 3/4 quart is 3 cups, 1/3 quart is 1 1/3 cups. To go the other way, divide cups by 4, or type them into the second field.

Gallons, quarts, pints and cups

U.S. kitchen measures double at each step: 1 gallon = 4 quarts = 8 pints = 16 cups. Every step is ×2 except gallon to quart (×4), and a cup is 8 fl oz. A slow cooker labeled 6 quarts holds 24 cups; a 2-quart saucepan holds 8. A 9 × 13 inch baking dish holds about 3 quarts, or 12 cups, which helps when you double a casserole meant for an 8-inch square pan (2 quarts, 8 cups).

To scale a recipe, open Convert a list of values and paste every amount in quarts on its own line; the CSV gives each in cups. For fluid ounces as the main answer, use quarts to ounces; for amounts already in ounces, ounces to cups.

A quart of berries

Berries and cherry tomatoes are sold by the U.S. dry quart, which is about 16% larger than the liquid quart: 4.65 cups of volume. Choose US dry quart in the switch to see it. The measuring-cup line rounds it to 4 2/3 cups. A recipe that asks for “1 quart of strawberries” usually means the market box, not 4 measured cups.

Metric and UK measures

The result lists metric cups (250 mL) as well. A UK quart is 1.137 liters, or 4.8 U.S. cups; pick it in the switch for British recipes. For liters, use quarts to liters.
