Quarts to Liters (qt to L)

A U.S. quart is 0.946 liters — about 5% less than a liter — so 2 quarts is 1.89 L and 5 quarts is 4.73 L. Switch to dry or UK quarts if needed.

How to convert quarts to liters

Multiply the quarts by 0.946353:

liters = quarts × 0.946352946

5 qt × 0.946353 = 4.732 L. The factor is exact: a U.S. liquid quart is a quarter of a gallon of 231 cubic inches, which NIST gives as 0.946352946 liter. For a quick estimate, take the quarts and subtract 5% — or treat a quart as “a liter, a little short”. To go the other way, type the liters into the second field: 1 liter is 1.057 quarts.

Motor oil: quarts and liter bottles

U.S. owner’s manuals give oil capacity in quarts, while oil is often sold in 1-liter bottles and 4- or 5-liter jugs. Because a liter is slightly more than a quart, the number of liter bottles is never more than the number of quarts:

Capacity Liters 1 L bottles to buy
4 qt 3.79 L 4
4.5 qt 4.26 L 5
5 qt 4.73 L 5
5.7 qt 5.39 L 6
6 qt 5.68 L 6
7 qt 6.62 L 7
8 qt 7.57 L 8

Check the manual for the exact figure with or without a filter change; the converter gives the liters to two decimals. European and Asian manuals list the capacity in liters already — use the second field to see it in quarts, for example 4.5 L is 4.76 quarts.

Liquid, dry and UK quarts

Three quarts are still in use. The U.S. liquid quart (0.946 L) is the default here — milk, broth, oil and paint. The U.S. dry quart (1.101 L) measures berries, cherry tomatoes and other produce sold by the quart box. The UK quart (1.137 L) appears in British and older Commonwealth recipes. Pick the quart in the switch above the converter; the result shows the other two on separate lines, so a “quart” of strawberries is 1.101 L, not 0.946 L.

Is a quart bigger than a liter?

A U.S. liquid quart is smaller: 32 fl oz against 33.8 fl oz in a liter. The dry and UK quarts are larger. For fluid ounces, see ounces to liters; for gallons in the other direction, liters to gallons.
