Milliliters to Liters (mL to L)
A liter is 1,000 milliliters, so divide by 1,000: 500 mL is 0.5 L and 1,500 mL is 1.5 L. The result also shows U.S. gallons and quarts.

How to convert milliliters to liters
Divide the milliliters by 1,000:
liters = milliliters ÷ 1,000
Dividing by 1,000 moves the decimal point three places to the left:
| Milliliters | Move the point 3 places | Liters |
|---|---|---|
| 2,500 mL | 2.500 | 2.5 L |
| 1,500 mL | 1.500 | 1.5 L |
| 500 mL | 0.500 | 0.5 L |
| 250 mL | 0.250 | 0.25 L |
| 50 mL | 0.050 | 0.05 L (not 0.5) |
To go the other way, multiply liters by 1,000, or use liters to mL.
Milliliters to liters chart
| Milliliters (mL) | Liters (L) |
|---|---|
| 1 mL | 0.001 L |
| 5 mL | 0.005 L |
| 10 mL | 0.01 L |
| 50 mL | 0.05 L |
| 100 mL | 0.1 L |
| 200 mL | 0.2 L |
| 250 mL | 0.25 L |
| 330 mL | 0.33 L |
| 355 mL | 0.355 L |
| 500 mL | 0.5 L |
| 750 mL | 0.75 L |
| 1,000 mL | 1 L |
| 1,500 mL | 1.5 L |
| 2,000 mL | 2 L |
| 2,500 mL | 2.5 L |
| 3,000 mL | 3 L |
| 3,785.411784 mL | 3.785 L |
| 5,000 mL | 5 L |
3,785.41 mL is one U.S. gallon. Values between 1 and 1,000 mL come out as fractions of a liter, so 330 mL is 0.33 L and 5 mL is 0.005 L.
Adding up bottles and servings
Milliliters are easy to add, then convert the total once. Open Convert a list of values, paste each amount on its own line, and the CSV gives every line in liters; add the column for the total. Some common totals:
| Containers | Total |
|---|---|
| 4 × 500 mL bottles | 2,000 mL = 2 L |
| 6 × 330 mL cans | 1,980 mL = 1.98 L |
| 3 × 750 mL bottles | 2,250 mL = 2.25 L |
| 8 × 250 mL glasses | 2,000 mL = 2 L |
Why a liter is exactly 1,000 milliliters
Since 1964 the liter has been defined as exactly one cubic decimeter — the volume of a cube 10 cm on each side. A milliliter is a thousandth of that, which makes it exactly one cubic centimeter (1 cm³, written cc in medicine and engines). Because the definitions are exact, converting between milliliters, liters and cubic centimeters never needs rounding; only conversions to U.S. units such as gallons, quarts or fluid ounces produce long decimals.
Lab glassware, measuring jugs and baby bottles are usually marked in milliliters, while larger containers — soda bottles, coolers, fuel cans — are labeled in liters. Converting the small amounts first and adding them in milliliters avoids decimal mistakes, as in the table above.
Liters and U.S. gallons
The result shows each total in U.S. gallons and quarts as well: 2 L is 0.528 gallons or 2.11 quarts — a little more than half a gallon. For gallons as the main answer, use liters to gallons; for fluid ounces, mL to ounces.
