Liters to Milliliters (L to mL)

A liter is 1,000 milliliters, so 0.75 L is 750 mL and 2.5 L is 2,500 mL. The result also shows U.S. fluid ounces and cups.

How to convert liters to milliliters

Multiply the liters by 1,000:

milliliters = liters × 1,000

Multiplying by 1,000 moves the decimal point three places to the right:

Liters Move the point 3 places Milliliters
2.5 L 2,500. 2,500 mL
1 L 1,000. 1,000 mL
0.75 L 750. 750 mL
0.33 L 330. 330 mL
0.05 L 50. 50 mL (not 500)

To go the other way, divide milliliters by 1,000, or use mL to liters.

Milliliters, cubic centimeters and cc

A liter is defined as one cubic decimeter — a cube 10 cm on each side — so a milliliter is one cubic centimeter. Medicine syringes, lab glassware and engine sizes often write cc: a 5 cc syringe holds 5 mL, and a 2.0 L engine displaces 2,000 cc. Water weighs about 1 gram per milliliter, so a liter of water is about 1 kg. Motorcycles and small engines are usually described in cc (a 250 cc scooter), cars in liters (a 2.0 L engine); both describe the same quantity, the volume swept by the pistons.

Liters and milliliters on U.S. labels

Under the Fair Packaging and Labeling Act, most consumer packages in the U.S. state their net contents in both U.S. customary and metric units — which is why a soda bottle reads 2 L (67.6 fl oz) and a can reads 12 fl oz (355 mL). Beverages are often sold in round metric sizes: 330 mL, 500 mL, 750 mL, 1 L, 1.75 L and 2 L. Small sizes are given in milliliters and large ones in liters, so converting between them is mostly a matter of moving the decimal point. For bigger containers measured in gallons, see gallons to liters.

Liters in U.S. cups and ounces

The result lists U.S. fluid ounces and cups next to the milliliters:

  • 1 L = 1,000 mL = 33.81 fl oz = 4.23 cups;
  • 0.5 L = 500 mL = 16.91 fl oz = 2.11 cups;
  • 0.25 L = 250 mL = 8.45 fl oz = 1.06 cups.

For gallons, use liters to gallons; for fluid ounces as the main answer, mL to ounces.

Frequently asked questions

How many mL are in a liter?

1,000. Milli means one thousandth, so a milliliter is 0.001 liter.

How many mL is 0.75 L?

750 mL — the standard wine bottle.

How many mL is 2.5 L?

2,500 mL. Move the decimal point three places right: 2.5 → 2,500.

Is 1 mL the same as 1 cc?

Yes. A milliliter is exactly one cubic centimeter (cm³, often written cc), because a liter is defined as one cubic decimeter.

How many cups is a liter?

4.23 U.S. cups (a U.S. cup is 236.6 mL), or 4 metric cups of 250 mL.

How many mL is half a liter?

500 mL — about 16.9 U.S. fluid ounces.
