Teaspoons to Milliliters (tsp to mL)

A U.S. teaspoon is 4.93 mL, and nutrition labels round it to 5 mL. So 2 teaspoons is 9.86 mL and half a teaspoon 2.46 mL.

How to convert teaspoons to milliliters

Multiply the teaspoons by 4.92892:

mL = tsp × 4.92892159375

2 tsp × 4.929 = 9.86 mL. The factor is exact: a U.S. teaspoon is 1/6 of a fluid ounce, and a fluid ounce is 29.5735295625 mL. Nutrition labels and most metric measuring spoons use a rounded teaspoon of 5 mL; the difference is about 1.4%. To go the other way, use mL to teaspoons.

So a recipe that calls for 4 teaspoons of vanilla can use 1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon. The result also lists tablespoons and fluid ounces. For cups and larger amounts, see cups to ounces; for metric recipes written in liters, liters to mL.

Recipes from other countries

British and Australian recipes use a 5 mL teaspoon and a 15 mL tablespoon (20 mL in Australia), so their spoon measures match metric spoons, not the U.S. 4.93 mL exactly. The difference is too small to matter for a teaspoon of spice. For larger amounts written in tablespoons, use the tablespoon size of the recipe’s country: four Australian tablespoons are 80 mL, against 59 mL for four U.S. tablespoons.

Kitchen spoons are not teaspoons

A teaspoon in a recipe is a measuring spoon, not a spoon from the drawer. Silverware teaspoons hold anywhere from about 2.5 to 7 mL, so a heaping or a small spoon can double or halve an amount. For baking soda, salt and spices, level the measuring spoon with a straight edge; a rounded spoon can hold half as much again.

Medicine is measured in mL

For liquid medicine, use the dosing cup, oral syringe or spoon packed with it, and read the dose in milliliters; the FDA asks makers to label doses in mL for this reason. If the package has no device, a pharmacist can provide one. This converter is for cooking and general measuring — not for working out a dose. For other kitchen measures, see ounces to mL and ounces to cups.
