How to convert teaspoons to ounces

Divide the teaspoons by 6:

fl oz = tsp ÷ 6

3 tsp ÷ 6 = 0.5 fl oz. The factor is exact in U.S. customary measure: a tablespoon is 3 teaspoons and a fluid ounce is 2 tablespoons, so 3 × 2 = 6. The result also shows tablespoons and milliliters. To go the other way, multiply fluid ounces by 6.

Small bottles in teaspoons

Extracts, syrups and oils are sold in fluid ounces and used by the teaspoon, so converting tells you how far a bottle goes:

Bottle Fluid ounces Teaspoons
Vanilla extract, small 1 fl oz 6 tsp
Vanilla extract, common size 2 fl oz 12 tsp
Vanilla extract, large 4 fl oz 24 tsp
Hot sauce, small 5 fl oz 30 tsp
Dropper bottle 1 fl oz 6 tsp

A recipe that uses 1 1/2 teaspoons of vanilla gets 8 batches from a 2-ounce bottle. When a recipe gives an extract in ounces — common in large-batch and commercial recipes — multiply by 6 to measure it with spoons.

Why a teaspoon is a sixth of an ounce

U.S. kitchen measures halve or third each other: a cup is 8 fluid ounces, an ounce is 2 tablespoons and a tablespoon is 3 teaspoons. Teaspoons are the only step that divides by 3, which is why the results come out as sixths: 1 tsp is 0.1667 oz, 2 tsp is 0.3333 oz and 4 tsp is 0.6667 oz. For decimals that round cleanly, convert to tablespoons first — 4 tsp is 1 1/3 tbsp — or to milliliters, where a teaspoon is 4.93 mL.

Spices and baking powder in ounces

Spice jars are labeled by weight in ounces, not by volume, so the fluid-ounce answer here does not tell you how many teaspoons are in a jar. A 2-ounce jar of ground cinnamon holds about 21 teaspoons because cinnamon weighs about 2.6 g per teaspoon, while a 2-ounce jar of salt holds only about 10 teaspoons at 5.7 g each. For baking powder and baking soda, a level teaspoon weighs about 4.6 g and 6 g. To count teaspoons in a jar, divide the jar weight in grams by the weight of one teaspoon.

Teaspoons, tablespoons and milliliters

For milliliters as the main answer, see tsp to mL; for ounces in milliliters, oz to mL. For cups, use cups to ounces: a cup holds 48 teaspoons. Liquid medicine is dosed in milliliters with the cup or syringe in the box, not with kitchen teaspoons, and this page does not give dosing advice.
