How to convert liters to ounces

Multiply the liters by 33.814, or divide by 0.0295735:

fluid ounces = liters ÷ 0.0295735295625

2 L ÷ 0.0295735 = 67.63 fl oz. The divisor is exact: NIST defines the U.S. fluid ounce as 29.5735295625 milliliters. For a quick estimate, multiply by 34 — the answer is about 0.5% high. A common mistake is to treat a liter as 32 ounces; that is a quart, which is about 6% smaller. To go the other way, use ounces to liters.

Glasses of water in liters

Water goals are often given in liters, and glasses in fluid ounces. Divide the ounces by the glass size:

Liters Fluid ounces 8 oz glasses 16.9 oz bottles
1 L 33.8 fl oz 4.2 2
1.5 L 50.7 fl oz 6.3 3
2 L 67.6 fl oz 8.5 4
2.5 L 84.5 fl oz 10.6 5
3 L 101.4 fl oz 12.7 6
3.7 L 125.1 fl oz 15.6 7.4

A 16.9 oz bottle is a 500 mL bottle, so the bottle count is simply liters × 2. To add up several containers, open Convert a list of values and paste the liters one per line.

Reusable bottles are often sold in both units. A 750 mL bottle holds 25.4 fl oz, a 1 L bottle 33.8 fl oz, and a 40 oz insulated bottle 1.18 L — refill a 40 oz bottle twice and you have had about 2.4 liters. For a goal of 2 liters with a 24 oz tumbler, plan on three refills (72 fl oz).

Fluid ounces are not ounces of weight

This page converts volume. A liter of water weighs 35.27 ounces (1 kg), not 33.8; the two numbers differ because a fluid ounce of water weighs a little more than an ounce. For oils, milk or syrup the weight differs again. If a recipe gives ounces by weight, use grams to ounces with the weight in grams.

U.S. and UK fluid ounces

A British fluid ounce is 28.41 mL, so a liter is 35.2 UK fl oz against 33.8 U.S. fl oz. The result shows both. For gallons as the answer, see liters to gallons; for small amounts, mL to ounces.
