How to convert quarts to ounces

Multiply the quarts by 32:

fluid ounces = quarts × 32

1.5 qt × 32 = 48 fl oz. The factor is exact: a U.S. quart is 2 pints of 16 fluid ounces. To go the other way, divide fluid ounces by 32, or type them into the second field — 20 fl oz is 0.625 quart.

Quarts are handy for drinks too. A daily goal of 2 quarts of water is 64 fl oz: four 16 oz glasses, or a little under four 16.9 oz bottles (67.6 fl oz). A 32 oz sports bottle holds exactly one quart, so filling it twice covers the goal. To add up several drinks, open Convert a list of values and paste the quarts one per line.

Quarts, pints and cups

The U.S. kitchen measures double at each step, so quarts split into round numbers:

Measure Fluid ounces Cups Pints
1/4 quart 8 fl oz 1 1/2
1/2 quart 16 fl oz 2 1
1 quart 32 fl oz 4 2
2 quarts 64 fl oz 8 4
4 quarts (1 gallon) 128 fl oz 16 8

The result shows cups and pints next to the ounces, so a recipe in quarts can be measured with a 1-cup measure. For a whole gallon, use gallons to ounces; for cups as the main answer, ounces to cups.

Canning jars

Mason jars are sold by name, not always by volume. A quart jar holds 32 fl oz, a pint jar 16 fl oz, a half-pint (jelly) jar 8 fl oz, and a half-gallon jar 64 fl oz. A recipe that yields 6 quarts of tomato sauce fills six quart jars or twelve pint jars — 192 fl oz in total. Leave the headspace the recipe asks for, so each jar holds slightly less than its full volume.

Dry and UK quarts

Berries and cherry tomatoes are sold by the U.S. dry quart, which is larger: 37.24 fluid ounces of volume (1.101 L). A UK quart is 40 UK fluid ounces, or 38.43 U.S. fluid ounces (1.137 L). Pick the quart in the switch above the converter; the result shows the other two quarts on separate lines. For metric amounts, see quarts to liters.
