How to convert quarts to gallons

Divide the quarts by 4:

gal = qt ÷ 4

10 qt ÷ 4 = 2.5 gal. The factor is exact: the U.S. gallon is defined as 4 liquid quarts, or 231 cubic inches. The result also shows liters and fluid ounces. To go the other way, multiply gallons by 4 — type the gallons into the second field.

Oil, paint and milk

Containers are sold in both sizes, so it helps to count quarts against gallons before you buy:

Job Quarts Gallons What to buy
Oil change, 5-quart engine 5 qt 1.25 gal 5-quart jug, or a gallon plus a quart
Oil change, 8-quart truck 8 qt 2 gal two gallon jugs
Paint touch-up 1 qt 0.25 gal one quart can
Small room, two coats 6 qt 1.5 gal two gallons, or a gallon and two quarts
Party punch 12 qt 3 gal three gallons

A gallon of paint usually costs less than four quarts, so once a job needs three quarts or more, a gallon is often the better buy. The paint calculator works out the gallons from the wall area.

Reading engine oil specs

Owner’s manuals list oil capacity in quarts, “with filter” and “without filter”; the filter holds about half a quart more. A 4.5-quart capacity is 1.125 gallons, so one gallon jug is not enough and a gallon plus a quart leaves a little over. Jugs sold as “5 quart” are exactly 1.25 gallons. Check the dipstick after filling rather than emptying every bottle, since the old oil does not all drain.

Liquid, dry and UK quarts

This page uses U.S. liquid measures. A U.S. dry quart (berries, produce) is 1.101 liters and is not used with gallons. The UK imperial gallon is 4 imperial quarts of 1.137 liters, so 4 UK quarts are 4.546 liters against 3.785 liters for 4 U.S. quarts. For liters as the answer, see quarts to liters, which has a switch for each kind of quart.

Gallons, quarts, pints and cups

1 gallon = 4 quarts = 8 pints = 16 cups = 128 fluid ounces. Each step halves the one before, except gallon to quart. For smaller measures, use quarts to cups or gallons to ounces.
