How to convert gallons to quarts
Multiply the gallons by 4:
qt = gal × 4
5 gal × 4 = 20 qt. The factor is exact: a U.S. gallon is 4 quarts, a quart is 2 pints and a pint is 2 cups. The result also shows pints, cups and liters. To go the other way, divide by 4, or use quarts to gallons.

Each step down halves: gallon, half gallon, quart, pint, cup. The same names in dry measure — a dry quart of berries — are about 16% larger than the liquid ones, so this converter is for liquids. A common memory aid draws a big G with four Q’s inside, two P’s in each Q and two C’s in each P. For cups, see quarts to cups; for fluid ounces, gallons to ounces.
Oil, paint and cooking
Motor oil is sold in quarts and 5-quart jugs; a car that takes 5 quarts needs 1.25 gallons. Paint comes in quarts, gallons and 5-gallon buckets — four quarts cost more than a gallon, so buy the gallon if you need more than about three quarts. Large-batch cooking — stock, chili, cider — is easier in gallons: a 12-quart stockpot holds 3 gallons. For metric, a gallon is 3.785 liters and a quart 0.946 L; see gallons to liters and quarts to liters.
Canning and brewing
Canning and home-brewing recipes jump between gallons and quarts: a 5-gallon batch of beer fills about 53 twelve-ounce bottles, and a 2-gallon batch of pickles fills 8 quart jars. Canners hold 7 quart jars or 9 pint jars in most sizes. When scaling a recipe from gallons to jars, convert to quarts first and round up to whole jars, leaving the headspace the recipe calls for.
U.S. and imperial gallons
The UK and Canada once used the imperial gallon of 4.546 liters, divided into 4 imperial quarts of 1.137 L. An imperial gallon is 1.2 U.S. gallons, so old British recipes and fuel figures in imperial gallons need converting before comparing. This converter uses U.S. liquid measure.
