Volume Calculator

A box 10 feet long, 8 feet wide and 4 feet high holds 320 cubic feet — 2,394 gallons or 11.85 cubic yards. Pick a shape and enter its sizes to get the volume in every common unit.

Formula: V = l × w × h. Measure every size in the same unit; for a container, use the inside sizes. A radius is half the diameter.

Volume formulas

Shape Formula
Cube a³
Box (rectangular prism) l × w × h
Cylinder π r² h
Tube (hollow cylinder) π (R² − r²) h
Sphere 4/3 π r³
Hemisphere 2/3 π r³
Cone π r² h ÷ 3
Cone frustum (bucket) π h (r₁² + r₁r₂ + r₂²) ÷ 3
Capsule π r² h + 4/3 π r³
Spherical cap (dome) π h (3a² + h²) ÷ 6
Ellipsoid 4/3 π a b c
Square pyramid a² h ÷ 3

Prisms and cylinders are base area times height. Pointed shapes — cones and pyramids — hold exactly a third of the prism or cylinder with the same base and height. A frustum is a cone with the top cut off, the shape of most buckets, cups and planters. The spherical cap here takes the radius of its flat base and its height, which are what you can measure on a dome or a bowl. Enter every size in the same unit; the result shows the formula with your numbers in it and, for round shapes, the answer in terms of π.

The calculator shows all of these at once. For conversions on their own, see gallons to liters and liters to gallons.

Everyday volumes

Container Sizes Volume
Aquarium 48 × 13 × 21 in 13,104 in³ = 56.7 gal
Room 12 × 10 × 8 ft 960 ft³
Bucket (frustum) top r 6 in, bottom r 5 in, 12 in tall 4.95 gal
Round pool 24 ft across, 4 ft deep 1,809.6 ft³ = 13,536 gal
Garden bed 8 × 4 ft, 10 in deep 26.7 ft³ = 0.99 yd³

An aquarium’s listed size is usually the outside volume; the water it holds is a little less because of the glass and the gap at the top. A pool’s gallons decide how much chlorine and how long a fill takes. For a round pool or a tank on its own, the cylinder volume calculator also works backwards from a volume; for balls and round tanks, the sphere calculator; for piles of gravel and cones, the cone volume calculator.

Pipe volume

The water a pipe holds is a cylinder: choose Cylinder, enter half the inside diameter as the radius and the pipe’s length as the height, and read the result in gallons. Use the inside diameter, not the nominal size printed on the pipe, which can differ by a fraction of an inch. For a quick figure, these are the U.S. gallons per foot and per 100 feet for common inside diameters:

Inside diameter Gallons per foot Gallons per 100 ft
1/2 in 0.0102 1.02
3/4 in 0.0229 2.29
1 in 0.0408 4.08
1 1/2 in 0.0918 9.18
2 in 0.1632 16.32
4 in 0.6528 65.28

Measuring for volume

Measure inside a container for what it holds and outside for the space it takes up. Use the radius — half the diameter — in the round formulas. For a shape that is not on the list, split it into pieces: an L-shaped bed is two boxes, a silo is a cylinder with a cone or a dome on top, and a tank with rounded ends is a capsule. For soil, mulch, gravel and concrete ordered by the cubic yard, the cubic yards calculator handles several areas and depths at once.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate volume?

Multiply the area of the base by the height for boxes and cylinders, take a third of that for cones and pyramids, and use 4/3 πr³ for a sphere. The calculator has the formula for twelve shapes and shows it with your numbers.

How do I convert cubic feet to gallons?

Multiply by 7.48. A cubic foot is 1,728 cubic inches and a U.S. gallon is 231 cubic inches, so 1 ft³ = 7.48052 gallons. 320 cubic feet is 2,394 gallons.

How many cubic feet are in a cubic yard?

27, because a yard is 3 feet and 3 × 3 × 3 = 27. Divide cubic feet by 27 to get the cubic yards you order for soil, mulch or concrete.

What is the volume of a bucket?

A bucket is a cone frustum. With a 6-inch top radius, a 5-inch bottom radius and a 12-inch height, V = π × 12 × (36 + 30 + 25) ÷ 3 = 1,143.5 in³, about 4.95 gallons.

What is the difference between volume and capacity?

Volume is the space a shape takes up; capacity is how much a container holds, which uses the inside sizes. For a thick-walled tank or pipe, measure inside to get the capacity.

How do I find the volume of an irregular shape?

Split it into simple shapes — boxes, cylinders, cones — and add their volumes, or submerge it in water and measure how much the level rises.
