How to convert feet to inches

Multiply the feet by 12:

inches = feet × 12

6 ft × 12 = 72 in. If the length is in feet and inches, multiply the feet and add the inches: 5 ft 6 in = 5 × 12 + 6 = 66 in. Type the feet and the inches in their own fields and read the total.

Decimal feet to inches

Tape measures used by surveyors and some plans show feet in tenths and hundredths. A tenth of a foot is 1.2 inches, not 1 inch:

Heights in inches

Some forms — sports rosters, medical and fitness apps — ask for height in inches only. Multiply the feet by 12 and add the inches; for example, 5 ft 7 in is 5 × 12 + 7 = 67 in (see 5 feet 7 inches to inches). Doors, ceilings and furniture are measured the same way: an 8 ft ceiling is 96 in, and a standard 6 ft 8 in door is 80 in tall:

66 inches: 5 × 12 = 60, plus 6 = 66. Enter 5 in Feet and 6 in + inches and the converter adds them.

How many inches is 5.5 feet?

66 inches. The .5 is half a foot, which is 6 inches — not 5 inches. 5.5 ft is the same as 5 ft 6 in.

How do I convert decimal feet to inches?

Multiply only the decimal part by 12: 7.25 ft → 0.25 × 12 = 3 in, so 7 ft 3 in, or 87 inches in total. Each tenth of a foot is 1.2 inches.

Why are there 12 inches in a foot?

The foot and inch come from older English measures, and 12 divides evenly into halves, thirds, quarters and sixths. The U.S. kept the system; since 1959 both units are defined through the meter (1 in = 2.54 cm exactly).
