Writing the date
The same day can be written several ways, and the order of month and day differs between countries:
| Style | Example (October 7, 2026) | Used in |
|---|---|---|
| Month first | 10/07/2026 | United States |
| Day first | 07/10/2026 | Most of Europe, Latin America, Australia |
| ISO 8601 | 2026-10-07 | Software, file names, international forms |
| Written out | Wednesday, October 7, 2026 | Letters and contracts |
When a reader may be in another country, write the month as a word or use the ISO format — 07/10/2026 means July 10 in the U.S. and 7 October almost everywhere else. File names that start with the ISO date sort in the right order.
Dates on forms and documents
U.S. government and bank forms usually ask for MM/DD/YYYY, often in separate boxes, and expect a four-digit year. Contracts and letters spell the month out to avoid any doubt. Software, spreadsheets and databases store dates in ISO order, and pasting a day-first date into a U.S. spreadsheet can silently swap the day and month — 07/10/2026 becomes July 10. When you sign and date a document late at night or while traveling, use the local date where you sign, which is the one shown above.
Day of the year, week number and quarter
The day of the year counts from January 1 as day 1; it is handy for planning and for tracking a streak. The ISO week number starts on Monday, and week 1 is the week that contains the first Thursday of January, so the first days of January can belong to week 52 or 53 of the year before — and some years, such as 2026, have a week 53. Quarters are three-month blocks: Q1 is January to March and Q4 October to December.
