From October 8, 2026 that is 78 days, which is 11 weeks and 1 day: 11 × 7 = 77, plus one. A week count is handy for planning — shipping, saving or a weekly countdown chain — because most plans are made a week at a time.

Christmas Day is always December 25

Christmas Day has a fixed date, so only the weekday moves: one day later each year, two after February 29. In 2026 it falls on a Friday, making a three-day weekend from Friday to Sunday. Christmas Day has been a federal holiday since 1870 and is listed among the legal public holidays in 5 U.S.C. § 6103: federal offices, post offices and banks close, and the stock markets are closed.

When a federal holiday falls on a Saturday, most federal employees get the Friday before off; when it falls on a Sunday, the Monday after. In 2027 Christmas Day is a Saturday, so the federal holiday is observed on Friday, December 24, 2027. Private employers set their own rules, so check your company’s holiday calendar.

Planning by the weeks left

Shipping cut-off dates for Christmas delivery come in mid-December and differ by carrier and service, so look them up early and count back from the date above. Many people plan gift budgets per week: divide the total by the weeks left, which the calculator gives you. Hanukkah moves with the Hebrew calendar and can fall in late November or in December, and Kwanzaa runs from December 26 to January 1, so the season can stretch over several weeks. Advent starts on the fourth Sunday before Christmas — November 29 in 2026, 26 days or 3 weeks and 5 days before December 25 — so a 24-door Advent calendar bought for December 1 covers only part of the season.
