How the date is set

Labor Day has no fixed day of the month: it is the first Monday in September, so it always falls between September 1 to September 7. It has been a federal holiday since 1894 and is listed among the legal public holidays in 5 U.S.C. § 6103.

Labor Day is a federal holiday: federal offices, post offices and most banks and stock markets are closed, and mail is not delivered. Many private employers give the day off, but they are not required to.

Planning around Labor Day

Labor Day makes a three-day weekend, Saturday to Monday, and is often treated as the unofficial end of summer. Deadlines that count business days skip it; if a bill or a filing falls due on Labor Day, it usually moves to Tuesday.

Canada celebrates Labour Day on the same first Monday in September; most other countries mark workers on May 1 instead.

Why the date changes every year

Because the day is tied to a weekday, its date shifts each year: Labor Day 2027 is September 6, and in 2028 it is September 4, two days earlier, because 2028 is a leap year. The earliest possible date is September 1 and the latest September 7. Schools in many states start the week before or the week after it, and the federal holiday also moves business-day deadlines by one day when they span that Monday. Payroll that falls on Labor Day is usually paid on the Friday before.

The table above lists the dates from the next one on, so you can plan several years ahead — for a family trip, a school calendar or a work schedule — without counting Sundays and Mondays by hand.

To count the days to any other date, use the days between dates calculator; to find a date a number of days from now, the date calculator or 90 days from today.
