The countdown uses your device’s date, so it is right in your time zone; on the day itself it says so. The calculator at the top counts the same days from today and adds the weeks, months and business days in between.

How the date is set

Mother’s Day has no fixed day of the month: it is the second Sunday in May, so it always falls between May 8 to May 14. President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed it a national observance in 1914 (36 U.S.C. § 117), following Anna Jarvis’s campaign that began with a memorial service in 1908.

Mother’s Day is not a federal holiday: it always falls on a Sunday, so banks, post offices and most businesses keep their usual Sunday hours.

Planning around Mother’s Day

Flowers and gifts sell out and delivery fees rise in the last days before; order early and count back the shipping days from the date above. Mother’s Day is one of the busiest days of the year for restaurants, so book brunch or lunch ahead.

Many countries share the second Sunday in May, including Canada and Australia; the U.K. celebrates Mothering Sunday three weeks before Easter, and Mexico on May 10.

Why the date changes every year

Because the day is tied to a weekday, its date shifts each year: Mother’s Day is May 9 in 2027 and May 14 in 2028. The earliest possible date is May 8 and the latest May 14. If you mark it in a calendar, set it as a recurring event on the second Sunday in May rather than on a fixed date, or the reminder will drift. Father’s Day follows five or six weeks later, on the third Sunday in June.

The table above lists the dates from the next one on, so you can plan several years ahead — for a family trip, a school calendar or a work schedule — without counting Sundays and Mondays by hand.

To count the days to any other date, use the days between dates calculator; to find a date a number of days from now, the date calculator or 90 days from today.
