Yards to Meters (yd to m)

A yard is exactly 0.9144 meters, so 100 yards is 91.44 m and 2.5 yards of fabric is 2.29 m.

How to convert yards to meters

Multiply the yards by 0.9144:

meters = yards × 0.9144

100 yd × 0.9144 = 91.44 m. The factor is exact. To go the other way, divide meters by 0.9144 (or multiply by 1.0936) — type the meters into the second field. For feet, see feet to yards; for meters to feet, meters to feet.

A meter is about 9% longer than a yard, so treating them as equal is fine for a rough sense of distance but not for anything measured.

Why exactly 0.9144

From 1893 the U.S. yard was defined from the meter as 3600/3937 m, about 0.9144018 m. In 1959 the United States, the United Kingdom and four other countries agreed on a common international yard of exactly 0.9144 m — two parts per million shorter. That agreement also fixed the foot at 0.3048 m and the inch at 2.54 cm, so all of these conversions are exact; only the old survey units, retired by NIST in 2023, used the 1893 value.

Yards and meters in sports

Sport Yards Meters
Football field, goal line to goal line 100 yd 91.44 m
Football field with end zones 120 yd 109.73 m
40-yard dash 40 yd 36.58 m
Short-course pool (U.S.) 25 yd 22.86 m
100-yard swim 100 yd 91.44 m
500-yard swim 500 yd 457.2 m
Golf: par-3 hole of 150 yd 150 yd 137.16 m
Golf: drive of 250 yd 250 yd 228.6 m

High school and college pools in the U.S. are often 25 yards; international competition uses 25 m and 50 m pools.

Fabric by the yard

U.S. fabric stores sell by the yard and fractions of a yard; European patterns call for meters. Common cuts:

  • 1/2 yd = 0.457 m (45.7 cm)
  • 1 yd = 0.914 m (91.4 cm)
  • 1 1/2 yd = 1.372 m
  • 2 1/2 yd = 2.286 m
  • 3 yd = 2.743 m

When a pattern asks for 2 m, buy 2.2 yd (2 ÷ 0.9144 = 2.19). For landscaping materials sold by the cubic yard, a length conversion does not apply — use the cubic yards calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How many meters is a yard?

Exactly 0.9144 meters, or 91.44 cm. The international yard was defined that way in 1959; the foot (a third of a yard) is 0.3048 m.

How many meters is 100 yards?

91.44 meters. 50 yards is 45.72 m and 200 yards is 182.88 m.

Is a yard longer than a meter?

No. A meter is about 9% longer: 1 m = 1.0936 yd, or 1 yard 3.37 inches.

How long is a football field in meters?

An American football field is 100 yards (91.44 m) between the goal lines, and 120 yards (109.73 m) including both end zones. It is 53 1/3 yards (48.77 m) wide.

Is a 25-yard pool the same as a 25-meter pool?

No. 25 yards is 22.86 m, so a 25 m pool is 2.14 m longer per length. Over 100 yards versus 100 meters that is 8.56 m — which is why swim times in yards and meters are not directly comparable.

How many feet are in a yard?

3 feet, or 36 inches. A yard is 91.44 cm.
