How to convert kilometers to meters
Multiply the kilometers by 1,000:
meters = kilometers × 1,000
Multiplying by 1,000 moves the decimal point three places to the right: 5 km = 5,000 m, 0.4 km = 400 m, 42.195 km = 42,195 m. Add zeros when you run out of digits: 0.05 km is 50 m, not 5 m.
To go the other way, divide meters by 1,000 — the meters to kilometers converter does that. For miles, use kilometers to miles; for feet, meters to feet.
Race distances in meters and laps
Track coaches count in meters and laps of a 400 m track (inside lane):
| Race | Kilometers | Meters | Laps of 400 m |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1,500 m | 1.5 km | 1,500 m | 3.75 |
| One mile | 1.609 km | 1,609.34 m | about 4 |
| 3K | 3 km | 3,000 m | 7.5 |
| 5K | 5 km | 5,000 m | 12.5 |
| 10K | 10 km | 10,000 m | 25 |
| Half marathon | 21.0975 km | 21,097.5 m | 52.7 |
| Marathon | 42.195 km | 42,195 m | 105.5 |
A mile is 9.34 m more than four laps, which is why the 1,600 m race in U.S. high schools is not quite a mile.

Kilometers and meters on maps
Topographic and hiking maps print a scale such as 1:25,000 or 1:50,000. On a 1:25,000 map, 1 cm stands for 25,000 cm — that is 250 m, or a quarter of a kilometer — so 4 cm on the map is 1 km on the ground. On a 1:50,000 map, 1 cm is 500 m and 2 cm is a kilometer.
Trail signs abroad give distances in kilometers and climbs in meters: Summit 3.5 km, +450 m means 3,500 m of trail with 450 m (1,476 ft) of ascent. At an easy walking pace of 4–5 km/h, each kilometer takes 12–15 minutes on the flat, longer uphill.
Kilometers in feet and miles
The result shows each distance in feet and miles as well:
- 1 km = 3,280.84 ft = 0.6214 mi;
- 5 km = 16,404.2 ft = 3.107 mi;
- 10 km = 32,808.4 ft = 6.214 mi.
A kilometer is about five-eighths of a mile — a brisk 10–12 minute walk.
