How to convert meters to kilometers

Divide the meters by 1,000:

kilometers = meters ÷ 1,000

Dividing by 1,000 moves the decimal point three places to the left:

Meters Move the point 3 places Kilometers
42,195 m 42.195 42.195 km
5,000 m 5.000 5 km
1,500 m 1.500 1.5 km
400 m 0.400 0.4 km
50 m 0.050 0.05 km (not 0.5)

Count the zeros when you are unsure: 1,000 m has three, so it is 1 km; 100 m has two, so it is a tenth of a kilometer, 0.1 km; 10 m is a hundredth, 0.01 km. To go the other way, multiply by 1,000, or use the kilometers to meters converter, which also counts track laps.

Swimming distances in km and miles

Pools in the U.S. are often 25 yards, while long-course pools and open-water races are in meters:

Event Meters Kilometers Miles
400 m 400 m 0.4 km 0.249 mi
800 m 800 m 0.8 km 0.497 mi
1,500 m 1,500 m 1.5 km 0.932 mi
1,650 yd (“swimmer’s mile”) 1,508.76 m 1.509 km 0.9375 mi
Open water 5 km 5,000 m 5 km 3.107 mi
Open water 10 km 10,000 m 10 km 6.214 mi

Meters on signs and in apps

Outside the U.S., short distances on road signs are given in meters and longer ones in kilometers: Exit 500 m is half a kilometer, about a third of a mile, and Next services 25 km is 15.5 miles. Navigation and fitness apps switch the same way, showing meters up to about 1 km and kilometers after that. Elevation on maps and trail signs stays in meters even for large values — a pass at 2,400 m is 2.4 km above sea level, or 7,874 ft.

Meters, kilometers and miles

The result shows miles and feet next to kilometers, so a metric distance is easy to place: 800 m is 0.497 mile (just under half a mile) and 3,000 m is 1.864 miles. For miles as the main answer, see meters to miles; for feet, meters to feet.
