Race distances
Track and road races mix the two units:
| Race | Meters | Miles |
|---|---|---|
| Metric mile | 1,500 m | 0.932 mi |
| 1,600 m | 1,600 m | 0.994 mi |
| Mile | 1,609.344 m | 1 mi |

U.S. high school tracks race 1,600 meters — four laps of a 400-meter track — which is 9.344 meters, about 30 feet, short of a full mile. The “metric mile” of 1,500 meters is shorter still. A road marathon is measured as exactly 42.195 km; “26.2 miles” is a rounding, about 54 meters short.
Pace per mile and per kilometer
Running watches and treadmills show pace either per mile or per kilometer. Because a mile is 1.609 km, a pace per mile is 1.609 times the pace per kilometer: 5:00 per kilometer is 8:03 per mile, and 8:00 per mile is 4:58 per kilometer. On a track, one mile is four 400-meter laps plus 9.3 meters, so a runner timing 1,600 meters can add about two seconds at an easy pace to estimate the mile.
