Yards to Miles (yd to mi)

A mile is 1,760 yards, so 880 yards is half a mile and 5,000 yards is 2.84 miles. The result also shows feet and kilometers.

How to convert yards to miles

Divide the yards by 1,760:

mi = yd ÷ 1,760

5,000 yd ÷ 1,760 = 2.84 mi. The divisor is exact: a statute mile is defined as 1,760 yards, or 5,280 feet. The result also shows feet and kilometers. To go the other way, multiply miles by 1,760.

Track, golf and swimming

Several sports still measure in yards, and the totals add up to miles:

Distance Yards Miles
Quarter-mile track lap (old U.S. tracks) 440 yd 0.25 mi
Football field, goal line to goal line 100 yd 0.057 mi
18-hole golf course (typical) 6,500 yd 3.69 mi
Swim workout 3,000 yd 1.70 mi
5-kilometer race 5,468 yd 3.11 mi

A golfer who walks an 18-hole course covers more than its listed length — the yardage counts only tee to green, not the walk between holes — so 4 to 5 miles on foot is common. In swimming, a 25-yard pool means 70.4 lengths to a mile, which is why a “swimmer’s mile” of 1,650 yards (66 lengths) is used instead.

Pacing a swim or a run in yards

Pool workouts are written in yards in most U.S. high schools, colleges and clubs, while race results and fitness apps often report miles. A 2,000-yard practice is 1.14 miles; a 4,000-yard practice is 2.27 miles. Because a yard is a little shorter than a meter, the same workout in a 25-meter pool covers about 9% more distance, so times from yard and meter pools are not directly comparable. On a running track, the inside lane of a modern 400-meter track is 437.4 yards, just short of the old quarter mile, so four laps are 1,749.8 yards — about 10 yards less than a full mile.

Yards, feet and miles

A yard is 3 feet, so a mile is 5,280 feet; dividing yards by 1,760 is the same as dividing the feet by 5,280. For shorter distances, see yards to feet; for meters, yards to meters. A yard is 0.9144 m, so 1,760 yards is 1,609.344 m, the exact length of the mile in meters; for kilometers as the main answer, use miles to km.

A quick check

Half a mile is 880 yards and a quarter mile 440, so any distance near those is easy to place: 1,000 yards is a bit more than half a mile, 2,000 yards a bit more than a mile. To convert a list of distances from a training log, open Convert a list of values and paste the yards one per line.
