How to convert milliliters to tablespoons

Divide the milliliters by 14.7868:

tbsp = mL ÷ 14.7868

30 mL ÷ 14.7868 = 2.03 tbsp. A U.S. tablespoon is half a fluid ounce, which works out to 14.78676478125 mL. The result also shows teaspoons and fluid ounces. For a quick kitchen answer, dividing by 15 is close enough; the exact figure matters only for large amounts, where the 1.4% difference is about a quarter tablespoon per cup and a full tablespoon per quart. To go the other way, multiply tablespoons by 14.79.

Labels round a tablespoon to 15 mL

U.S. nutrition labels and measuring-spoon sets treat a tablespoon as 15 mL. The rounding is 1.4%, too small to matter in a recipe, so a metric 15 mL spoon stands in for a U.S. tablespoon. If you only need a kitchen answer, divide milliliters by 15: 45 mL is 3 tablespoons, 75 mL is 5.

Milliliters U.S. tablespoons Label tablespoons (15 mL)
15 mL 1.01 tbsp 1 tbsp
30 mL 2.03 tbsp 2 tbsp (1 fl oz)
45 mL 3.04 tbsp 3 tbsp

100 mL 6.76 tbsp 6 2/3 tbsp

Australian tablespoons

Australia uses a 20 mL tablespoon — four teaspoons instead of three. A recipe from there that asks for 2 tablespoons means 40 mL, or 2.7 U.S. tablespoons. The UK, Canada and New Zealand use 15 mL. When a recipe gives both milliliters and spoons, trust the milliliters.

Oils, sauces and dressings

Bottles of oil and sauce list servings in tablespoons and contents in milliliters. A 500 mL bottle of olive oil holds 33.8 tablespoons; at 2 tablespoons a day it lasts about 17 days. Salad dressing recipes from metric countries give oil and vinegar in milliliters: 90 mL of oil and 30 mL of vinegar are 6 and 2 tablespoons. Teaspoons, ounces and cups

A tablespoon is 3 teaspoons; for teaspoons as the answer, see mL to tsp. Two tablespoons make a fluid ounce — mL to oz — and 16 make a cup, so 250 mL, a metric cup, is 16.9 tablespoons. For the reverse of this page, use tsp to mL and multiply by three, or tablespoons to ounces. Liquid medicine is dosed with the cup or syringe that comes with it, not with kitchen spoons; this page converts units only.
