How to convert ounces to tablespoons
Multiply the fluid ounces by 2:
tbsp = fl oz × 2
1.5 fl oz × 2 = 3 tbsp. The factor is exact in U.S. customary measure: a fluid ounce is defined as 2 tablespoons. The result also shows teaspoons and milliliters. To go the other way, divide by 2, or use tbsp to oz.

Why some calculators say 1.92
A popular converter returns 1 oz = 1.917 tbsp. It treats “oz” as an ounce of weight (28.35 g) and converts it to the volume of that much water. A fluid ounce is a volume — 29.57 mL — and is exactly 2 tablespoons. Use 2 for anything measured in fluid ounces: drinks, oil, sauces, syrups. For dry ingredients sold by weight, tablespoons depend on the ingredient; for butter, a 4-ounce U.S. stick happens to be 8 tablespoons, so the two numbers agree. For weight, see oz to grams.
Shots, sauces and dressings
| Measure | Fluid ounces | Tablespoons |
|---|---|---|
| Pony shot | 1 fl oz | 2 tbsp |
| Standard shot | 1.5 fl oz | 3 tbsp |
| Ramekin of sauce | 2 fl oz | 4 tbsp |
| 1/2 cup | 4 fl oz | 8 tbsp |
| 1 cup | 8 fl oz | 16 tbsp |
When a cocktail calls for 3/4 ounce of lime juice, that is 1 1/2 tablespoons. A dressing of 6 ounces of oil and 2 ounces of vinegar is 12 and 4 tablespoons. For cups, see oz to cups; for milliliters, oz to mL.
Measuring without a jigger
A standard U.S. tablespoon holds half a fluid ounce, so a set of measuring spoons stands in for a jigger: 3 level tablespoons are a 1.5-ounce shot, and 1 tablespoon is half an ounce for bitters-heavy drinks or syrups. Measure liquids over a cup, not over the drink or the pan, to catch overflow. For sauces and dressings scaled up from a recipe in tablespoons, divide by 2 to get ounces and pour them with a liquid measuring cup instead of counting many spoons.
Tablespoons, teaspoons and milliliters
A tablespoon is 3 teaspoons and 14.79 mL; labels round it to 15 mL. Six teaspoons make a fluid ounce. For teaspoons as the answer, use oz to tsp. Australian recipes use a 20 mL tablespoon, so 2 of their tablespoons are 1.35 U.S. fluid ounces rather than 1.
