How to convert square feet to square meters

Multiply the square feet by 0.09290304, or divide by 10.7639:

m² = sq ft × 0.09290304

100 sq ft × 0.0929 = 9.29 m². The factor is exact: a foot is 0.3048 m, so a square foot is 0.3048 × 0.3048 = 0.09290304 m². To go the other way, type square meters into the second field, or use square meters to square feet.

U.S. listings give floor area in square feet; most of the world uses square meters. Typical sizes:

Why 10 is not the right shortcut

A meter is 3.28 feet, so a square meter is 3.28 × 3.28 = 10.76 square feet, not 10. Dividing by 10 makes a metric area look about 7% larger than it is: 1,000 sq ft would become 100 m² instead of 92.9 m². For a quick estimate that stays within 1%, divide by 11 and add 2%: 1,000 ÷ 11 = 90.9, plus 2% ≈ 92.7 m².

Flooring, paint and materials

Materials sold by area follow the same conversion. Flooring is priced per square foot in the U.S. and per square meter elsewhere: $4 per sq ft is about $43 per m², because one square meter holds 10.76 square feet. Paint coverage on a U.S. can (350–400 sq ft per gallon) is 32.5–37 m² per gallon. For a garden bed, the mulch calculator takes the area in square feet and gives cubic yards.
