Kilobytes to Gigabytes (KB to GB)

1,000,000 KB is 1 GB in decimal units, the way drive makers count — but 0.95 GB in the binary units Windows uses. The result shows both, with megabytes beside them.

How to convert KB to GB

Divide the kilobytes by 1,000,000:

GB = KB ÷ 1,000,000

500,000 KB ÷ 1,000,000 = 0.5 GB. That is the decimal (SI) meaning of the prefixes — kilo- is 1,000, giga- is 1,000,000,000 — used by storage makers, network speeds and macOS. Many programs, including Windows, count in powers of 1,024 instead, so the result also shows the binary answer: 500,000 ÷ 1,048,576 = 0.477 GB. To go the other way, multiply gigabytes by 1,000,000.

Decimal and binary gigabytes

Unit Decimal (SI) Binary (IEC name)
1 KB 1,000 bytes 1,024 bytes (1 KiB)
1 MB 1,000 KB 1,024 KiB (1 MiB)
1 GB 1,000,000 KB 1,048,576 KiB (1 GiB)
1 TB 1,000,000,000 KB 1,073,741,824 KiB (1 TiB)

The two systems differ by 2.4% at the kilobyte, 4.9% at the megabyte and 7.4% at the gigabyte. International standards reserve kilo-, mega- and giga- for powers of 1,000 and name the binary units kibi-, mebi- and gibi-, but everyday software rarely shows those names. That is why one converter says 1,000,000 KB is 1 GB and another says 0.954 GB: both are right, in different systems.

File sizes and drives

A photo from a phone camera is about 3,000–5,000 KB; a song in MP3 is 4,000–8,000 KB; an hour of HD video is several million kilobytes. When you add up file sizes from an app that shows KB, convert the total to GB to compare with free space. A drive sold as 1 TB holds 1,000,000,000,000 bytes, which Windows reports as 931 GB — nothing is missing, it is the same capacity counted in binary units. For megabytes, see MB to GB.

Mailbox and upload limits

Email attachments are often capped at 20,000–25,000 KB — 20 to 25 MB, or 0.025 GB. Cloud storage plans are sold in gigabytes, so a folder of 3,500 photos at 4,000 KB each is 14,000,000 KB, or 14 GB. To see what share of a 15 GB free plan that uses, divide 14 by 15: about 93%, which the percentage calculator works out along with the space left. For long uploads, hours to minutes turns an estimate such as 1.3 hours into 78 minutes.

Bits and bytes

Internet speeds are in bits, not bytes: a 100 Mbps connection moves 12.5 megabytes per second at most, because a byte is 8 bits. A 4,000,000 KB file therefore takes at least 4,000 ÷ 12.5 = 320 seconds on that line. For time conversions, see minutes to seconds.

Frequently asked questions

How many KB are in a GB?

1,000,000 kilobytes in decimal (SI) units; 1,048,576 in binary units, where 1 KB is 1,024 bytes.

Why do two converters give different answers?

One divides by 1,000,000 (decimal), the other by 1,048,576 (binary). Both are in use; this page shows both answers.

Which one does Windows use?

Windows File Explorer counts in binary — 1 GB = 1,024 MB — but labels the result GB. macOS and drive makers count in decimal.

How many GB is 500,000 KB?

0.5 GB in decimal, 0.477 GB in binary.

What are KiB and GiB?

The official names for binary units: a kibibyte (KiB) is 1,024 bytes and a gibibyte (GiB) 1,073,741,824 bytes.

Why is my new drive smaller than advertised?

A 1 TB drive holds 1,000,000,000,000 bytes, which Windows shows as 931 GB because it divides by 1,024 three times.
