How to convert minutes to seconds

Multiply the minutes by 60:

s = min × 60

2.5 min × 60 = 150 s. The factor is exact. The result shows the same time as a clock reading — 2:30 — and in hours. To go the other way, divide seconds by 60. For minutes to hours, see minutes to hours.

Decimal minutes and clock time

Decimal minutes and minutes-and-seconds are easy to mix up:

Decimal minutes Seconds Timer reads
0.5 min 30 s 0:30
1.25 min 75 s 1:15
1.5 min 90 s 1:30
2.75 min 165 s 2:45
3.2 min 192 s 3:12

1.5 minutes is one minute and 30 seconds, not 1:50. To turn a clock reading such as 3:45 into seconds, multiply the minutes by 60 and add the seconds: 3 × 60 + 45 = 225 s. The time calculator adds and subtracts readings like 3:45 directly.

Workouts, cooking and phone timers

Interval workouts mix the two: 8 rounds of 45 seconds on and 15 off is 8 minutes in all, or 480 seconds. Microwave and oven timers take minutes and seconds, so a recipe that says 2.5 minutes means 2:30 on the keypad. Phone timers and stopwatches show the same format, and race results add tenths: a 5:12.4 mile is 312.4 seconds. For a whole day in seconds, see days to seconds; for milliseconds, milliseconds to seconds.

Pace and speed

Running pace is minutes per mile; turning it into seconds makes it easy to compare. An 8:30 pace is 510 seconds per mile, a 9:15 pace is 555 seconds, so the second is 45 seconds slower per mile — about 2 minutes 20 seconds over a 5K’s 3.1 miles. For speed rather than pace, 60 ÷ 8.5 minutes gives 7.06 mph; the mph to km/h converter turns it into 11.4 km/h.

Seconds in longer spans

An hour is 3,600 seconds and a day 86,400. A week is 604,800 seconds. Ten minutes is 600 seconds, the number often used for session timeouts and for parking meter blocks. To convert a list of lap times or durations at once, paste them into Convert a list of values below the converter.
