How to convert minutes to hours

Divide the minutes by 60:

hours = minutes ÷ 60

90 min ÷ 60 = 1.5 hours. The result also shows the same time as hours and minutes — 1 h 30 min — because a decimal and a clock reading are easy to mix up. To go the other way, type hours into the second field.

Payroll and billing use decimal hours, where the part after the point is a fraction of an hour, not minutes:

Rounding minutes on a time card

Many employers round punches to the nearest 5, 6 or 15 minutes. Under the federal rules, rounding to the nearest quarter hour is allowed only if it averages out — 7 minutes rounds down and 8 minutes rounds up. Billing in tenths of an hour works in 6-minute steps: 1–6 minutes is 0.1 hour, 7–12 minutes 0.2, and so on. Convert the rounded minutes, not the raw ones, when you check a pay stub.
