Milliseconds to Seconds (ms to s)

A second is 1,000 milliseconds, so 1,500 ms is 1.5 s and 300,000 ms is 300 s — 5 minutes. Long times also appear as a clock reading.

How to convert milliseconds to seconds

Divide the milliseconds by 1,000:

seconds = milliseconds ÷ 1,000

1,500 ms ÷ 1,000 = 1.5 s. Dividing by 1,000 moves the decimal point three places left: 250 ms is 0.25 s and 45 ms is 0.045 s. From 60 seconds up, the result also shows a clock reading — 90,061 ms is 1:30.061 (1 minute 30.061 seconds), and 3,723,004 ms is 1:02:03.004. To go the other way, multiply seconds by 1,000, or type the seconds into the second field.

Timeouts, latency and frame times

Programs measure short times in milliseconds, and settings often take them too:

What Milliseconds Seconds
One frame at 60 fps 16.67 ms 0.0167 s
Fast API response 100 ms 0.1 s
Debounce delay 300 ms 0.3 s
Typical HTTP timeout 30,000 ms 30 s
Session timeout 1,800,000 ms 30 min

When you read a log with many durations, open Convert a list of values, paste the milliseconds one per line and download the CSV in seconds. For the time between two clock readings, use the time duration calculator; to add up hours and minutes, the time calculator.

Milliseconds in sport and media

Timing systems in sport record results to the millisecond and then round them for display: a 100 m dash of 9,580 ms is shown as 9.58 s, and a lap of 83,456 ms is 1:23.456. Video and audio tools work the same way — a 2,500 ms fade lasts two and a half seconds, and a clip that starts at 754,200 ms begins at 12:34.200. The clock reading in the result appears for values from one minute up to 100 hours, so you can paste a split time or a timecode in milliseconds and read it the way a stopwatch shows it. Below a minute the plain seconds are clearer, so the clock line is hidden.

Millisecond timestamps

JavaScript’s Date.now(), Java’s System.currentTimeMillis() and many APIs count milliseconds since January 1, 1970 (UTC). Such a number has 13 digits today — 1,700,000,000,000 ms is November 14, 2023, 22:13:20 UTC. Enter one and the result shows the date in UTC; convert it to your time zone by adding or subtracting your offset. A 10-digit timestamp is in seconds, so multiply it by 1,000 first. For longer spans, such as weeks of uptime, see weeks to years.

Frequently asked questions

How many milliseconds in a second?

1,000. The prefix milli- means one thousandth.

What is 1500 ms in seconds?

1.5 seconds: 1,500 ÷ 1,000 = 1.5.

How many seconds is 60,000 ms?

60 seconds — exactly one minute. 300,000 ms is 5 minutes and 3,600,000 ms is one hour.

Is 100 ms fast?

For a user interface, yes: responses under about 100 ms feel instant. A blink of an eye takes roughly 100 to 400 ms.

How do I turn a millisecond timestamp into a date?

Enter the 13-digit number; the result shows it as a date and time in UTC. A 10-digit timestamp is already in seconds — multiply it by 1,000 first.

What is the difference between ms and µs?

A millisecond (ms) is a thousandth of a second; a microsecond (µs) is a millionth. 1 ms = 1,000 µs.
