Pounds to Stone (lbs to st)

How to convert pounds to stone

Divide the pounds by 14:

st = lb ÷ 14

150 lb ÷ 14 = 10.71 st. British scales and medical forms write the result as whole stone and the pounds left over, so the converter shows that too: 150 − 10 × 14 = 10, so 10 st 10 lb. To go the other way, multiply stone by 14 and add the pounds.

Stone and pounds, not decimals

The decimal part of a stone is not pounds. 10.5 stone is 10 stone 7 pounds, because half a stone is 7 pounds; 10.71 stone is 10 stone 10 pounds. Mixing the two is the most common error when copying a weight between a U.S. scale and a British form.

Where stone is used

The stone is a British and Irish unit for body weight; U.K. bathroom scales, gyms and doctors often give weight as “12 st 3”. It is not used in the U.S., and in the U.K. food and goods are sold in kilograms. Horse racing and boxing in Britain also quote weights in stone and pounds. For kilograms — the unit on most medical records worldwide — see lbs to kg; the result here shows kilograms as well.

Weight changes in stone

When tracking weight in stone, convert the change in pounds the same way: losing 21 pounds is 1 stone 7 pounds, and gaining 10 pounds is 10 pounds — less than one stone. A goal of “two stone” is 28 pounds or 12.7 kilograms. Because a stone is 14 pounds, small changes look small in stone; British slimming clubs often quote half-pound steps for that reason.
