How to convert ounces to pounds

Divide the ounces by 16:

pounds = ounces ÷ 16

40 oz ÷ 16 = 2.5 lb. To write it as pounds and ounces, keep the whole pounds (2) and turn the remainder back into ounces: 0.5 × 16 = 8, so 40 oz is 2 lb 8 oz. The converter shows both, plus the weight in grams and kilograms.

To go the other way — pounds into ounces — multiply by 16, or use the pounds to ounces converter, which also takes pounds and ounces together.

Writing ounces as pounds and ounces

Scales, shipping labels and baby weights often use pounds and ounces, and the decimal is easy to misread: 2.5 lb is 2 lb 8 oz, not 2 lb 5 oz. A few more:

  • 28 oz = 1.75 lb = 1 lb 12 oz
  • 50 oz = 3.125 lb = 3 lb 2 oz
  • 100 oz = 6.25 lb = 6 lb 4 oz
  • 125 oz = 7.8125 lb = 7 lb 13 oz

Ounces vs. fluid ounces

A U.S. ounce (oz) is a weight: 28.349523125 grams by definition. A U.S. fluid ounce (fl oz) is a volume: 29.5735295625 milliliters. A fluid ounce of water weighs about 1.04 oz, so for water the two are close; for oil, flour or honey they are not, because those weigh less or more than water for the same volume.

If the label says fl oz — a drink, a bottle of sauce — the amount is a volume. Convert it with ounces to milliliters or ounces to cups, not with this page.

Ounces in grams and kilograms

One ounce is exactly 28.349523125 g, so 16 oz is 453.59237 g — the definition of the pound. For metric weights, the ounces to grams converter has its own table, and the pounds to kilograms converter takes pounds and ounces together.

Frequently asked questions

How many ounces are in a pound?

16. The avoirdupois pound used for everyday weights in the U.S. is exactly 16 avoirdupois ounces, so one ounce is 1/16 = 0.0625 pound.

How many pounds is 40 ounces?

2.5 pounds, or 2 pounds 8 ounces: 40 ÷ 16 = 2.5, and the 0.5 pound left over is 8 ounces.

How do I convert ounces to pounds and ounces?

Divide by 16 and keep the whole number as pounds; the remainder is ounces. 100 oz ÷ 16 = 6 remainder 4, so 100 oz is 6 lb 4 oz. The converter shows this line under every result.

Is a fluid ounce the same as an ounce?

No. An ounce measures weight; a fluid ounce measures volume. They match only roughly, and only for water: 1 U.S. fluid ounce of water weighs about 1.04 ounces. For volumes, use the ounces to milliliters or ounces to cups converters instead.

How many ounces is half a pound?

8 ounces. A quarter pound is 4 ounces and three-quarters of a pound is 12 ounces — the familiar 4 oz, 8 oz and 12 oz package sizes.

Why are there 16 ounces in a pound?

The avoirdupois system, used in English trade since the Middle Ages, split the pound into 16 ounces because 16 halves cleanly into 8, 4, 2 and 1. The U.S. kept it, and NIST Handbook 44 still lists 1 pound = 16 ounces exactly.
