How to convert pounds to ounces

Multiply the pounds by 16:

ounces = pounds × 16

2.5 lb × 16 = 40 oz. If the weight is written in pounds and ounces, multiply the pounds and add the ounces: 7 lb 8 oz = 7 × 16 + 8 = 120 oz. Enter the ounces in + ounces and the converter does the addition.

For the other direction, divide ounces by 16 — the ounces to pounds converter shows the result in decimal pounds and in pounds and ounces. The short answer — 16 ounces in a pound — has its own page with the common mix-ups: how many ounces in a pound.

Decimal pounds to ounces

Store scales print weights in tenths and hundredths of a pound. Each tenth is 1.6 ounces, not 1 ounce:

Pounds (lb) Ounces (oz) Grams (g)
0.1 1.6 45.36
0.2 3.2 90.72
0.25 4 113.4
0.3 4.8 136.08
0.4 6.4 181.44
0.5 8 226.8
0.6 9.6 272.16
0.7 11.2 317.51
0.75 12 340.19
0.8 12.8 362.87
0.9 14.4 408.23

So 1.5 lb of cheese is 24 oz, and 0.75 lb is 12 oz — not 7.5.

Shipping, cooking and baby weights

Ounces are the unit for anything light enough to weigh in fractions of a pound. Postal rates for small parcels step up by the ounce, so a 1.3 lb package is billed as 21 oz rather than “about a pound”. Recipes list meat and cheese in ounces: a 1.25 lb pack of ground beef is 20 oz, enough for five 4 oz patties. Birth weights are given in pounds and ounces, and a newborn of 7.4 lb weighs 7 lb 6.4 oz — the decimal is not the ounces. In each case, multiply the decimal part of the pounds by 16 and add it to the whole pounds times 16.

For pounds straight to grams, use pounds to grams; for kilograms, the pounds to kilograms converter, which also accepts pounds and ounces.

Frequently asked questions

How many ounces are in a pound?

16 ounces. The avoirdupois pound used for everyday weights in the U.S. is exactly 16 avoirdupois ounces (NIST Handbook 44, Appendix C).

How many ounces is 2.5 pounds?

40 ounces: 2.5 × 16 = 40. The half pound is 8 ounces, so 2.5 lb is also written 2 lb 8 oz.

How do I convert pounds and ounces to ounces?

Multiply the pounds by 16 and add the ounces. A baby of 7 lb 8 oz weighs 7 × 16 + 8 = 120 ounces. Type 7 in Pounds and 8 in + ounces and the converter adds them for you.

How many ounces is a quarter pound?

4 ounces. Half a pound is 8 ounces and three-quarters of a pound is 12 ounces.

How many ounces is 0.3 pounds?

4.8 ounces: 0.3 × 16 = 4.8. That is about 136 grams. Decimal pounds on deli and produce scales are tenths of a pound, not ounces, so 0.3 lb is not 3 oz.

Are dry ounces and fluid ounces the same?

No. Ounces measure weight; fluid ounces measure volume. A pound is always 16 ounces of weight, while a pint is 16 fluid ounces of volume. For water the two are close (1 fl oz weighs about 1.04 oz), for most other foods they are not.
