Fahrenheit to Celsius (°F to °C)

Subtract 32 and multiply by 5/9: 350 °F is 176.67 °C (set 180 °C), 98.6 °F is 37 °C and 0 °F is −17.78 °C. The result shows the steps.

How to convert Fahrenheit to Celsius

Subtract 32, then multiply by 5/9 (or divide by 1.8):

°C = (°F − 32) × 5/9

350 °F − 32 = 318, and 318 × 5/9 = 176.67 °C. Order matters: subtract first, then multiply. Below 32 °F the result is negative — 14 °F − 32 = −18, and −18 × 5/9 = −10 °C. The converter shows these steps with your number on the “worked out” line. To go the other way, use Celsius to Fahrenheit.

Converting in your head

Subtract 30 and halve. The result line labeled quick estimate shows it for weather temperatures:

°F Quick estimate ((°F − 30) ÷ 2) Exact °C Off by
20 °F −5 °C −6.7 °C 1.7 °C
32 °F 1 °C 0 °C 1 °C
50 °F 10 °C 10 °C 0
70 °F 20 °C 21.1 °C 1.1 °C
90 °F 30 °C 32.2 °C 2.2 °C
100 °F 35 °C 37.8 °C 2.8 °C

The rule is exact at 50 °F and stays within about 2 °C for everyday weather. For ovens it is far off — 350 °F would give 160 °C instead of 177 °C — so the converter shows the estimate only between −4 and 104 °F.

Oven temperatures

American recipes give oven temperatures in Fahrenheit. Ovens with a Celsius dial are usually marked every 10 or 20 degrees, and a fan (convection) oven needs about 20 °C less:

Reference points

Water freezes at 32 °F (0 °C) and boils at 212 °F (100 °C) at sea level: 180 Fahrenheit degrees for 100 Celsius degrees, which is where 5/9 comes from. Normal body temperature is about 98.6 °F (37 °C), and 100.4 °F is 38 °C. The scales meet at −40. For U.S. distances in the same forecast, see miles to km.

Frequently asked questions

What is 350 °F in Celsius?

176.67 °C. Ovens marked in Celsius are usually set in steps of 10 or 20 degrees, so use 180 °C, or 160 °C in a fan oven.

What is 98.6 °F in Celsius?

37 °C: 98.6 − 32 = 66.6, and 66.6 × 5/9 = 37. It is the traditional figure for normal body temperature.

What is 0 °F in Celsius?

−17.78 °C — a very cold winter day, well below the freezing point of water (0 °C).

What is 100 °F in Celsius?

37.78 °C — a very hot day, or a slight fever if it is a body temperature.

What is 400 °F in Celsius?

204.44 °C. Set 200 °C in a conventional oven or 180 °C with the fan.

Is −40 °F the same as −40 °C?

Yes. −40 is the one temperature where both scales show the same number.
